We needed a quick overnight on our way from Montana to Michigan and this was just the ticket. There is construction going on nearby, but the detour signs directing us to the Recreation Area were very clearly marked. The campground itself has very private, wooded sites and were easy to back into. Firewood is sold at a reasonable rate and you can visit the firewood stand or order and pay online. We wish we were staying longer, but must move on. Will definitely return.

We love COE campgrounds and book when we can during our travels. Gull Lake is a beautiful facility with lots to do and see and is close to many amenities in nearby Brainerd. The sites are very private. The camp hosts keep the area clean and pretty. There are even shovels and rakes to use at your campsite if needed (which came in handy to dispose of a big load of dog crap right next to our campsite left by an inconsiderate camper). However, there are 2 major issues: 1) bright security lights throughout the facility. There is one directly above our site. The online map had no indication of these lights and they are so bright they ruin any chance of a dark sky experience; 2) the property on the east side of the campground is being cleared and all day all you hear is the noise of large machines and the constant beeping when they go in reverse. Our site is on the north side and a bit aways from the property being cleared but we clearly hear this noise and feel bad for those who booked sites on the east side which are directly next to all the activity. Definitely ruins any communing with nature and relaxing.

We drove straight to our site upon arrival (per the check in directions). Shortly after we arrived, the ranger checked us in at our site and shared information about the campground with us. All of the sites are gravel, level, very spacious and private. The campground its facilities are very clean. We ordered firewood for the weekend via text and it was delivered to us within an hour. Swimming beach is small but we’ll maintained. Gull Lake is stocked with fish and anglers will enjoy catching fish from a boat or the shore. Minutes from Brainerd and about 30 minutes from Cuyuna mountain bike trails. Great basecamp for a weekend or longer in the Brainerd Lakes area.

In the camping area a very nice restroom with free hot showers and one free washer and dryer. Near the fenced dam is a water and dump station. Play ground an fishing spots are also easy walk from sites.
You can get a pass from the very nice host to use the boat access and fish cleaning station at no additional cost.

This Corps of Engineers recreation area at the Gull Lake Dam provides a wooded campground with well maintained facilities. Most of the users are here to fish. A boat launch is provided as well as picnic and hiking areas.
Sites are in a wooded area. Most are spacious with screening from neighbors. Others are smaller (12A seems to be an after thought, wedged in between two others). 50 amp electricity is provided. Flush toilets and showers are also included. Sites are gravel with a few drive thru. Everything was very clean and well maintained.
Regular rate is $26 but $13 with a federal Senior Pass.
