Quite a few homeless calling this place home. Showed up and quickly turned around and left. Would not recommend. Also to note as of this review Shasta Lake is basically full and there is zero shoreline

Drive down an almost one-lane road with a 32' RV and tow vehicle, think that you possibly aren't at the right location, so you are slowly starting to panic, then you come to the end with a precarious cliff on one side and a two-foot drop from pavement to rutted out dirt, then look at all the deep ruts that you have to drive through to get to a somewhat level location, then you are there :-). Oh wait, don't forget about the random car with the blacked-out tinted windows just sitting there for hours and the locals that drive their 4X4 down to the lake to smoke out.
Other than that... a peaceful place.
Actually, not that bad, just not a totally relaxing location. Lake Shasta water level is about 150' below normal, which makes for a small river, rather than a lake.
Check out my video of the ruts and water level.

- The road off the 5 freeway eventually becomes basically a single lane. A car was able to pass us at one point but I’m not sure what we would have done if another large vehicle (especially another SUV + trailer) were to have met us on the road going in the opposite direction.
- This road is a winding one and unlit so you will want to consider driving in and out during daylight if you’re not comfortable driving a dark mountain road at night.
- At the end of the paved road you will see a gated entrance. To the left is a dirt path (with an additional gated entrance to the right). We drove onto the dirt path a little bit then walked further down to find a rougher dirt path where you can drive onto to reach the river bank. We just replaced a tire that morning as we went through Redding (ran over a nail at some point) and felt very reluctant to drive the rest of the way into the camping area in case a tire was punctured by the rocks on the ground.
- Finally, we didn’t consider how hot it would be and it was HOT! Our walk with the kids lasted maybe 15 minutes before we decided to slowly back up onto the paved road and head out.
- One final note, if you get anxious about being in remote wooded areas (i.e. fire risk) with only one way in and out (🙋🏻♀️), then this may not be the best place to visit

We thought this was free dispersed but an official vehicle came to check permits. So from May 15 to September you are paying $15 overnight and $10 day use. This was a nice boondocking spot for us, only a few RV’s here and a couple of tent campers among the trees. 4 miles paved road from I-5 to entrance. Road from there is dirt, rocks, washboard and some cracks in the earth. If you wanna camp beyond the general entrance, walk the road like we did to avoid potential roads that could damage your rig. We are in a lifted 30 ft TT and made it out fine. I-5 bridge over the river, expected noise. Big let down was the trash that people leave behind despite the few trash cans provided. At night we noticed a few trucks coming in after dark and hanging out under the bridge area. Not loud but headlights and flash lights could be a distraction to the nights peace. Portion of river that flows through notable drop in water level and quite muddy.

I was worried as I wound myself through the woods to the spot that there wasn’t going to be a cell signal but there was. Verizon and T-Mobile are both strong enough to teach online. Only one other camper here in a travel trailer also. Spending all day in the river with my dog.

Stayed in May 2021. Right on the water, really wonderful spot. Got full solar but there are spots in the trees if you want shade. Makeshift fire pits around. Great views!

Ranger stations and visitor centers are convenient places to obtain them, or you may take a simple quiz and print one off the internet.
In 2019 the lake was full and our site would have been under water! It is at 40% capacity right now (5/1/2021) and they will continue to let out more water for the farmers, so keep this in mind when planning your visit.

We have only shared this area with a handful of other campers over the last week(plus). Some came and went for just a day of fishing, and some stayed for a day or two. It was rainy over the first few days so I don’t think we experienced a typical weekend, but even in the rain, it was beautiful! The road in is a little rutted for a very short distance towards the end, but certainly doable if you go slow as we did with our 33’ fifth wheel. The water level on the lake is pretty low right now so there was plenty of room for all sizes of rigs. The shoreline is muddy and silty and not a great beach area for hanging out, but it was fine for launching our paddle boards. We also saw others launch their kayaks and a canoe. Don’t take your truck to the shore line, or you’ll almost definitely get stuck as we witnessed two separate day trippers do... There is some noise from the trucks on the bridge, and a nearby train, but we never heard it during the night. There was a fair amount of trash left behind by other campers, we cleaned up quite a bit, but seriously... please pack it out so we can keep these free sites open!

Excellent dry dispersed camping. Easy access with our small fifth wheel. Visited in April and not too busy. In the warmer mos it can be very busy here. Had a whole section of shoreline to ourselves and were able to let our dogs run and play in the water. Some noise from I5 bridge. Some litter/trash around unfortunately.
