The park office where you're supposed to register was closed and they wouldn't answer the phone either. So, like every other FCFS campground in the country we planned on settling in the morning when they opened - NOPE. An Gomer city park ranger came pounding on our door and hour after we had unhitched demanding to see our contract. I explained the situation and said we were planning on getting registered as soon as the office opened. He kicked us out at 5PM without a place to stay lined up instead.
The park office closes at 1PM. That's right, 1PM. There is no after hours registration or pay box available. None of this is mentioned on their website or any signage.
We ended up at the Newport News City Park Campground up the road. They actually are competent.

We arrived a few days before the 4th of July and were worried we'd have trouble getting a spot, but there were plenty to choose from. Not long after we arrived a couple of the staff showed up to make sure the power was turned on and gave us instructions for paying. The campground never filled up and we enjoyed our time here.

There was some street noise but not bad. Since it’s near a military base, we did get a jet flyover that was very loud but it only lasted a minute or two, so no big deal. I would definitely stay there again!

Little campground tucked in the middle of a city behind sports fields. The location was close to stores so we could replenish supplies and the campgrounds were in decent enough shape. In terms of noise it wasn’t bad as we got there after most of the kids sports had ended and we were pretty far away from the playgrounds. We occasionally heard a noisy car and it’s near a military base, so we definitely heard the jets, but it wasn’t that bad and it wasn’t the middle of the night or anything. Would recommend and would stay there again if in the area!
