We got the last site (spring break week). Since we were leaving early we didn’t unhook, but were disappointed that the loop we were in had no restrooms. Only sites 1-23 are walking distance to it. It’s very quiet, close to town, and has nice walking trails.

My wife and I have been here 3 times, and this last time we stayed in spot 21, and its one of the best ones! Nestled in the trees, next to a small cliff wall. The park as a whole is great because if you're not wanting to travel far, its close to DFW. But because it's close to DFW, we didn't feel as removed as we'd like. Light pollution from the metroplex is still a factor. But, we just bought a new camper and wanted to try it out for the first time somewhere close, and this is our place for that.
I went fishing in the quarry lake with my kayak and could a few good bass on some top-water lures. The hiking is nice, but it was too dang hot when we went, September 23-25. The bathrooms had spider webs and such, but I've used worse, so you'll be fine.
We'll be back when we feel like camping, but don't want to travel far.

We rented a full hookup with an air-conditioned cabin. Great set up on hot days. There is a lot of fishing, swimming, and hiking to do. The old fort is there. Across town you have access to Lake Jacksboro as well. Great time for all ages.

I had visited here before but really hadn't gotten to explore the park much, so decided to do a one day visit during Labor Day Weekend when I saw a site available. The main attractions of the park are several restored buildings from the mid-19th century fort, but there are also several short trails near the camping area, a small lake in an old quarry near the entrance, and a longer trailway that leads to a nearby lake. I enjoyed the trail to Rumbling Springs which actually runs in between the two main camping areas (a couple of sites, 33 and 34, can access the trail from their sites). Nothing spectacular but saw some deer and the small spring coming out of a cliffside is pretty cool.
Site 41 is the last site on the end of the eastern section of camping and sits next to the Prickly Pear trailhead. This site has a long paved driveway, is fairly level, and is easy to get into. The fire pit sits within a ring of trees so has great shade all day long.
This park is not remote (it sits on the edge of the city of Jacksboro) and you can often hear traffic noise, but it is still pretty peaceful, especially down by the creek and I saw several deer. I enjoyed seeing the historical buildings (plan to walk a lot, they are spread out around a very large parade ground and there is very little shade so be prepared) and exhibits. This is a nice little park and worth a couple of days to visit and relax.
One note on the price: $20 is the site fee per night. There are also per person fees per day if you do not have a Texas Parks Pass.

The only drawback is that there doesn’t seem to be too many large trees so shade would be scarce in the summer.

A creek runs thru the park, there are several nice hiking trails. There are restrooms but did not visit. Close proximity to town for any essentials. Small lake in park for fishing and maybe swimming. Super friendly park staff. Historical site as well. Loved my time here!

We stayed one night at the equestrian camp on our way through the area. We prefer leaving the equestrian spots for horse owners but it was the last one available in the park. Although, of the 5 sites in this loop, none of us had horses!
With only a couple of small pens and not much space, we could see why equestrians might not flock here. Hard to say from one night though.
The sites are long and narrow without much space between them. Road nosie is noticeable during the day but quiet at night.
There are no bathroom facilities in this loop, so be aware of that. There is a small dumpster available. The bathroom/shower facilities and dump station are down the road at the main campground. You do have 20-, 39- and 50-amp electric plus water hookup at your site.
The good part about this loop is that you're camping within site of the historic Fort Richardson and visiting the grounds is a short walk. The buildings are only open from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but you're welcome to wander the grounds and look in the windows. Make sure you grab a self-guided your brochure at check-in.
This was fine for a night or two, but for longer we'd encourage a stay at the main campground instead.
Phone service was good: Verizon 4 bars / T-Mobile 4 bars.
