Not sure if it was the time of year, but as soon as we stepped out these very pesky flies were crawling in our ears, nose, mouth and eyes. There were so many it was like a scene from the conjuring. We tried every bug defense we had with no luck. When we jumped back into the van about 10 or so got in with us. Our pups could not bare it.
We ended up settling down the raid at a turn out for a couple hours to see the most amazing sunset ever. Then just came back to sleep and move along. Not sure where our spider friends are this time of year, but they would be fat dumb and happy at this spot!

Notes: while the sites are good sized and reasonably dispersed, the parking spot for each is small and tight. Not very wide, not very deep - not trailer/RV friendly. Also few of the parking pads were level and some were pretty dramatically sloped. I was able to use leveling blocks in to get comfy in my Sprinter. All in all, it’s a tight drive through the campground loop with some overhanging tree limbs and small radius turns. Not class A friendly.
The 10 mile road up from Los Olivos is paved, but becomes mostly 1 lane and rough near the top close to the campground with switchbacks and some potholes.

Pretty drive to it up a decent road. Stayed on a Monday night and there was only one other site taken. No water but clean vault toilets. Lots of birds and squirrels.

We have a small pop-up trailer and we tow it with a minivan, which isn't usually a problem, but the 10 miles up the steep, winding, one lane road was frightening, albeit beautiful. We came on a busy weekend, due to the super bloom and there were tons of cars. In many areas vehicles will need to back down/up to accommodate a vehicle going the other direction. There is no railing, so there were many scary moments. It wouldn't be a big deal if there wasn't so much traffic.
Be sure to be quite prepared as the nearest town is Los Olivos - about a 30-45 minute drive away.
If you are just tent camping, then this is an excellent place. If you have a big trailer, bring your big balls, and a sedative for your passengers. It's extremely beautiful on the road up there, with lots of nearby hiking trails.
We were there in late March. There were lots of annoying gnats, but they don't bite so it's not a big deal - unless you can't deal with any bugs.
Pick sites on the outside of the loop and you can be pretty sure to get an excellent site. The ones in the middle are nice and big, but you won't be up against the trees.
