“Holy Terror Road, Isolated Campground”

Overall Rating

This campground is pretty isolated, and the road is rather horrific towards the end, but this is a convenient campground if you are trying to hike around the area of Mowich Lake or the Northwest side of Rainier as you have to take that road out anyway.

If you put the GPS coordinates in, when you are about 8 miles out the paved road will end. The next 6.5 miles to the ORV area entrance are pretty horrifically washboarded. I'm talking it broke my knife block and tried to kill me. If you are the "speed it up to smooth it out" type, just know that works a lot better when leaving than arriving (I don't know why. Magic?), and keep a close eye out for some sneaky potholes. If you are trying to go easier and protect anything precious (like your brain and yourself from Shaken Adult Syndrome), just be prepared for the last 6 miles to take you a bit.

Finally you will come to the entrance to the ORV/OHV area that will have a big sign and a wide open circle. That circle is horribly pitted and potholed, but if you cross slowly you will find the fee station at the far side. I couldn't find information online or at the fee station on a separate camping fee, so I paid the day use fee of $5 per night I was staying. They do accept some passes, I'm sorry I can't tell you which ones.

Once you pass the big entrance to the ORV area the road surprisingly gets better. There are some potholes, but nothing egregious. You will come to a sign for the campground at a split in the road, and if you're like me you won't know which way to go as the GPS coordinates listed end right there at that sign. You can go both ways. If you keep left/go straight you will eventually find a small marker that says CAMP and points to the right. Follow it and it will get you to the campground. However that direction has a water crossing that is crumbling making it narrow and a bit scary. If you go right at the split it will be faster and safer.

Once at the actual campground there are plenty of spaces, fire pits (be aware of burn bans though), picnic tables, restrooms everywhere, and even some covered picnic/fire areas! There is a very large one-way circle and a smaller offshoot circle. There are a few sites that are more open for solar power, though most are quite shaded in among the trees. It is a lonely campground, and I saw only one other camper two out of the three nights I was there.

Now since you are at an ORV area, you can expect some noisy riders coming through during the day, however I found that a good opportunity to listen to my favorite music that just needs to be listened to a bit louder. It really doesn't take much to drown it out, and while I was there they never lingered around the campground long.
