Nice sites, heated bathrooms. Very clean and well run. There is a daily visitor fee, so get a TX Park Pass if you're staying more than one night.

We camped here on our way to Big Bend National Park in February 2018. The park is easy to get to-- roads are paved and well-marked. We tent camped, but they did have RV spots with hookups available. We had a picnic table, and paved parking. We chose a spot right next to the rest rooms, which were clean and had showers available. They also had ice available ( $3) at the restrooms (on honor system, just put the cash in the box). There was a play area nearby (I think all it had was swings though). That didn't matter though because you are sitting in a valley between the mountains and the views are beautiful! We did a short hike, then headed into town. Also, one or two of the trails were off-limits due to a prescribed burn that was going on that day, but that didn't affect us at all.
Ft. Davis is very small, but if you want a decent meal, go to the Drug Store-- they have a 50's style soda fountain bar thingy, and the food is yummy. Nearby is the McDonald Observatory, where we went for a Star Party, which was fun, but VERY cold-- we ended up huddling in our sleeping bags while standing outside, waiting for our chance to try out the telescopes, but that was no big deal. Marfa is also nearby.
They have wifi here but its very spotty, and you're basically in a valley so don't expect much on that front. Would have loved to have had more time here for hiking!

Davis Mountains State Park is now one of my top five favorite Texas State Parks! What a beautiful place! Stunning vista, wildlife and best of all peace and quiet! While shopping in Fort Davis we stopped by the Fort Davis National Historic Site, bought some sinfully delightful pecans and ran into more rattlesnakes than I ever want to see again!
We camped in two different sites the first was site 41 the second, site #1 that is a handicapped site. fully outfitted for wheelchair access and quite close to the showers and the WiFi antenna.
Dont even think about using your cell phone here, we had three different carries with us and had no access.

Bureaucratic Incompetence
PROS: Hiking, close to McDonald Observatory, thorough ranger talks, good water. Beautiful scenery.
CONS: Paid $20 too much due to state park reservation system bureaucratic incompetence*1. Too smokey due to a “Prescribed Burn” program in the park. No cell coverage*2. Picnic table on wrong side of rig. Unreliable electric pedestal: had to wiggle the connection to get it to work. Then the electric went up and down during the night, repeatedly tripping the transfer switch in the rig. I called maintenance and all they did was reset the breaker. It should have been replaced since it could damage the rig. Restaurants in the town of Fort Davis are expensive: $13 for a burger and milk shake meal and $18 for a gourmet burger meal. Boring downtown historic district walk: only three expensive specialty shops and some hotels were open: not unique, not interesting to us. Cops are crawling the town looking for the slightest infraction. There are flashing speed signs: I was one MPH over the limit, the sign flashed and and a cop got on my tail. He did not stop me though. Dump station and picnic table on wrong side. Not customer focused.
*1 We had to make two reservations to stay two nights due to the prescribed burn program. Upon arrival, when we tried to settle this clerical mistake, they charged a $10 reservation change fee since the reservations were already made online. The ranger had no remorse that their incompetence that led to the overpayment and we were not happy. Their business motto is “Satisfaction not guaranteed”. Texas State Parks charge a daily use fee PER HEAD: very expensive. For a family of five, this could cost up to $280 per week.
*2 AT&T and Verizon coverage maps showed coverage in the campground. However the reality was ZERO coverage since the campground is in a “bowl” of mountains.

I stayed in mid-November. I had a full-hookup, pull-through site at the end of the road (site 10), so I had plenty of space without my neighbors being close. The cost was $25 for full hookups plus $6 per day vehicle fee. The campground was spotlessly clean. This is a beautiful park, with a road up to the top of the mountain at 5,500 ft for views of the Chihuahuan Desert. I had no cell service anywhere down around the campgrounds, but I got 4 bars of Verizon 4G in the parking lot at the top of the mountain. There was free wifi at the interpretive center, but it was too slow to be any use. I got gasoline at the grocery store in the small town of Fort Davis. There is a gas station there too, but it was closed and the pumps were switched off. The park is an excellent location for visiting Fort Davis National Historic Park and McDonald Observatory. The observatory is well worth visiting. I was occupied from noon until 9pm with a solar viewing, tours of two telescopes, an afternoon presentation, and an evening star party with a tour of the constellations at the amphitheater and the opportunity to view celestial objects through a dozen telescopes, all for $22. There is a nice cafe there too, to get supper before the star party.

This was our first time to stay at Davis Mountains State Park and it won't be our last! The park is beautiful with lots to do. A good number of trails that range from easy to difficult. Our spot had a picnic table with a canopy. Lots of birds, if you are a birdwatcher you will love it here. We had Acorn Woodpeckers in the tree and two Canyon Towhees that liked to hang out on the steps of our Airstream. The park was quiet, even on the weekends... there were a few kids that rode bikes during the day but they were not bothersome. The bathrooms were clean and the showers had plenty of hot water!
We did not have cell service. But I did plug in our WeBoost and I was able to get 3 bars (Verizon) and Blake was able to get 2-3 bars (AT&T). The wifi worked enough to surf the internet at a slow pace but was not strong enough to send or receive emails. We drove up the to the top of the mountain and had excellent coverage there. We were able to check our work email that way. We did use the library in Fort Davis a couple of days for work and their wifi is excellent. It was super quiet and super dark at night. The stars were amazing!

There was a glitch with our reservation (our fault), so when we arrived on a Thursday afternoon all the RV sites were full. We wanted to stay five nights and were offered a spot in the Equestrian area which is a couple hundred yards from the park entrance and across the road. Access is through a locked gate, you’re given the combination at park headquarters. You are tucked back away from the road so it was nice and quiet.
There are no hookups or other amenities in the equestrian area, but you can use any of the park facilities. A pretty good deal for just $10 a night. We were all alone for two nights and had just one other RV there the other nights. No shade and no privacy if you’re sharing the space. There is a trailhead there, but the hikers are mostly all gone by dusk and you have the place all to yourselves. Beautiful views of the surrounding hills. We loved it!
FYI – the trails open to mountain bikes are steep, narrow and the surface was mostly loose rock with the occasional sand trap. Rog rode 11 miles on the Sheep Pen Canyon Trail and Loop and wouldn’t recommend them.
Texas state parks also charge a daily per/person entrance fee which is waived if you purchase the $70 annual pass.
No Verizon signal boosted or otherwise in the Equestrian area. However, you can drive to the observation point in the park and get 2-3 bars of 4G.

Beautiful location, easy access, $25/night for FHU and cable! Lots of hiking although the trails are challenging. Bring plenty of water. Nearby to Ft Davis for your basic needs.
The cons:
No cell, none..not even with booster. I know other people managed to get service w/ a booster but I had no usable service with WeBoost 4G-M. It would show me 1 bar on Verizon or ATT but when I tried to make a call or use data it would cut off. The wifi at the park is barely usable for getting the occasional email. That's not a problem if you're not expecting it but don't go into it thinking you can work from your site. If you drive 5 minutes to the top of Skyline drive, you'll get great 4G speeds and excellent voice. The other option is to drive into Ft Davis and use the library there.

Having been moving frequently for the last several months it was nice to have a chance to stay for almost 2 weeks in this nice, clean, quiet campground with friendly hosts and helpful staff. Davis Mountains SP is easily reached on Rte 118 whether heading up from Ft Davis (entrance will be on the left) or coming in from Kent (on the right). Check in is easy-and if you come in after hours with reservations your packet is on the door. Otherwise, choose a site and go back to the office by 9am (although they are petty good about not being strict about that. We were there right at the end of Daylight Savings Time and located in the FAR west of the Central Time zone coupled with being surrounded by mountains it was not light until around 9 and the sun did not come over the hill until after 10. The office at the gate is chock full of information and everyone is extremely helpful.
Other reviewers have touched on the fact that the sites (other than the FHU which seem to be pretty well booked ahead of time) are mostly not level and in many cases quite close together. We were lucky with our 33' MoHo to have been assigned #61 which was slightly off front to back but otherwise a great space. At the end of the campground, next to the Camp Host and a park employee it was the last site before the group picnic area but that was never used while we were there. However, a number of sites are in a weird V formation so unless you are good friends you are a bit too close. Bathrooms are situated in various places though the one at our end was being renovated and closed. I do not however think it had showers and those were a bit of a walk. (one note-from our "street" there was a path that cut right through a tent campsite-#49- which was very often occupied. The path is well worn but the Park has not marked it an official path nor closed the site but people seemed to use it anyway. Avoid #49 if you are not fond of people walking through your site.) We did see several campers come in and not be satisfied with the assigned site and they were able to change without a problem which I suppose would be true unless the CG was crowded. Another couple we spoke with had requested their site so if you are large #61 would work-just have your blocks* and know that if you back in it will be the rear that is down. The sites themselves are asphalt but not very wide and drop off quite a bit to the ground.
The Indian Lodge had a restaurant that we found to be more like a large diner with food that was passable.
Although there is supposed to be a lot of wildlife there we saw only a few mule deer and smelled but never saw javelinas. Pets must be on leash but otherwise it's very pet friendly.
The bathrooms were clean-ish (the camp host does not clan them but a park maintenance woman does and she does not come everyday. However, it was mainly hair in the drain and a bit of dirt on the floor that was all that needed cleaning. The pressure is wonderful, the water hot and there are two showers in one bathrooms with two toilet stalls as well as an entire room with toilet, basin and shower for ADA.
The electric is 20/30 and the water at our site had decent pressure though I was not fond of the taste. The dump is across from the showers BUT you must be facing into the campground. There are a few trash bins throughout the CG but the ONLY recycling is at the entrance to sites 1-17.
OK now for why only 4 stars and it has been covered by others-no reception at all, NADA. Yes, there is WiFi at the Interpretive Center which is petty centrally located BUT it is very slow and unreliable. There is a bit of reception up at Indian Lodge but only data no phone. The only place to have reliable service within the park is at the top of Skyline Drive. Granted it's a few minutes by car and the glorious view from there is 360 but if your coach won't start and you are trying to coordinate getting someone to come it is a bit of a hassle. The other alternative is the beautiful, friendly and charming Jeff Davis County Library in Ft Davis. Free, very fast WiFi, a table with plugs to use your own laptop or use the bank of desktop computers.
Laundry- Davis Laundry on Cemetery Rd is clean basic and has double load washers ($2.50) and large dryers ($0.25 for 5 min).
Groceries-basic needs, mostly fresh but not a wide variety of produce and lots of junk and food-ish items at Porters Thriftway or more expensive but healthier options and a very good deli at Stone Village Market opposite Cemetery Road.
The McDonald Observatory is 1/2 hour to the west with an excellent show but make reservations AND if your intent is to see the stars from the telescopes skip the constellation talk and use them while the crowds are busy with the talk. Otherwise be prepared to wait...
Alpine is 1/2 hour away and home to an excellent ER at the Regional Hospital as well as the excellent Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross University where there is also a theatre with shows regularly throughout the year. If you go to the museum and are interested in maps call ahead and make an appointment with Matt Walker to see their phenomenal collection.
Marfa is also only 1/2 hour away.
All in all, a great stay with lots of good hiking trails and relaxation but the lack of signal was very frustrating.
