While I'm sure that the sites were wonderful, we never made it up there. The road was ridiculous and our 32 foot rig (plus towing a Jeep) was not up to the task. A self-identified "ammosexual" at the camp (who off roads professionally) said he wouldn't even take his Jeep to the top! Life is short. Spend it somewhere else.

We chose this campground blindly knowing that it was near Yellowstone (also free and first-come, first-serve). It is tucked back into the mountains of an Elk Refuge area and the road is TREACHEROUS! We chose this campground blindly knowing that it was near Yellowstone (also free and first-come, first-serve). It is tucked back into the mountains of an Elk Refuge area and the road is TREACHEROUS! Not just unpaved but FULL of potholes, very difficult to drive as a newb and impossible in anything less than 4WD. It’s 1.5 miles of that just to the first site and it only gets worse the further you go.
Site 11 was the first available and we believe only because a ranger was parked there. He let us know that he was only there to write a report because the previous night’s campers didn’t completely out their fire and almost set the whole place ablaze. He also mentioned that in the last 2.5 months, not a single spot has been open/available + this particular spot is sought after for the incredible mountaintop views. And he wasn’t lying! a short walk up the hill gave even better views of the distant mountains.
As for the site itself, rock lined fire pit, leveled ground, wood beam posts (assumedly to protect tents from the wind which is quite bad when that high up). This site didn’t have any trees or privacy from the “road” No toilets, water, hookups, etc. - primitive camping
Some of the other sites we passed had great views as well, others were set into the woods a bit more, it’s all about getting what you get I guess!
Another thing to note is that there are ATV tours that drive up and down the road (which I’m sure is fun but) making a lot of noise all day long.
Overall would recommend as long as your vehicle can handle the road.
Gjohns would stay here again

The road in, especially past the campground, is tough sledding. Big potholes and a couple of switchbacks that would be tough for bigger rigs. We were able to get our 36’ fifth wheel into site 11, which was level and had great views. I probably would not tow our rig up there again, and anything bigger would be really iffy.
