A helpful ranger told us to go at least 5 or 6 miles down China Hat Road to camp. No broke down RVs. Very pleasant dispersed experience. We were looking for only one night but will be back. The further down the road, the better. We were at least 8 miles down the road (east). Don’t miss this opportunity.

I wouldn’t recommend staying here. It’s a bunch of broke down RVs and tents with garbage everywhere. It’s like a junkyard with people living there. Sad.

This unbelievable abuse of a dispersed camping area warrants a special report. Mounds of garbage are unsightly and unhealthy. Long-term camping at this dispersed camping area appears to be in violation to the 14 day stay limit.

Parked, unhooked set up camp and had a weird car drive In really slow turn towards my site flash high beams then park at the next site down. Then someone walked almost up to my camper with headlamp and back multiple times. They then drove out and turned at my camper and flashed high beams multiple times. I decided I didn’t like that so hooked up and left and as I was leaving saw the same car parked on the side of the road not a minute down the road. Glad I left. Garbage everywhere. Multiple broken down campers.

I did webcam work all week. 34up 5down Verizon. Att is useless.
People live here. All of them. A lot of the rigs don't work and people have been here for months. Covid legit made people homeless and the local shelter stops by once a week in case anyone needs help. I felt safe but just be aware this isn't a weekend warrior site. Quiet little neighborhood.

We are from the area and we decided to camp here while we waited for an RV park to open up for availability. We camped at several different locations because in Oregon you can park for two weeks before having to move 5 miles from your spot on a map. Lots of open space, and yes there are others camping out there, but never felt sketchy or unsafe and we have three kids with us. Only downside is the amount of dust, but in central Oregon that is to be expected.

Lots of places to camp in heavily forest land but enough opening for solar. Can be trashy in some areas, you can find plenty of clean areas or out out by bagging it up. Have camped here many times.

Our planned boondock spot didn’t work out so last minute we drove here because it was close to town. Arrived at night, saw another rv and car so we felt safe. Then morning arrived. Tons of trash. Turns out that car we saw was stolen and stripped down. As we were getting our stuff together the couple at the other rv had an epic fight. Screaming, yelling, kicking, someone threatened to call the sheriff. At one point the guy got into the car to drive away and the girl jumped onto the back trunk and promptly fell off as he sped away. She chased him on foot, he stopped and they walked back to the rv together holding hands. At this point we felt safe to drive past them and get out. Go to the forest service when you arrive in Bend. They will give you a 7 map set of all the allowed dispersed camping in the Deschutes National Forest. There are thousands of places to stay. Don’t stay here.
