I arrived around 6pm and didn't see anyone else around, and got the best spot that was the furthest from the road. Pitching a tent that requires pegs was quite difficult, and I had to use a rock to hammer my pegs into the road. I was surrounded by blueberry bushes (but they weren't in season yet!) and I had a wonderful view of the peak of Mount Shasta from my site.

There is enough room at the above link for a number of campers. Saw a few people tent camping there as well. The road in is a bit rough and steep, wouldn't recommend it for anything larger than a large-sized camper van if I remember correctly.
There is a pullout for larger rigs here: https://goo.gl/maps/AuLTgR5HPuS5C3tA8
It is closer to the road, and much less room for a lot of vehicles, but it is a pretty nice spot as it has a line of trees between you and the road. This is where we camped, as the "main" spot was full on Memorial Day Weekend. Both have partial views of Mount Shasta, and you can't beat how close it is to Castle Lake and Heart Lake.
Overall, a solid camping area, but don't expect much privacy.

There is a site on top of the rode, but when you drive in on the gravel road ( My Hyundai accent made it) it really opens up. I was here in my 32' bounder. There are two huge open spaces. One when you first drive in. The other is down below, just follow the road. Both placed are level. The main road is above you, but the noise level is petty low.

We scoped this out from our Jeep and I'm glad we did. It's a good, paved windy road up and the dispursed sites are gravel and pretty level. What a magnificent spot for a small trailer or tent camper. The views of the mountain are fantastic and there is privacy between spaces. T-Mobile has 2G here and our Verizon jetpack had reasonable speed. There might be one spot for a larger rig right next to the road. We decided not to stay.
