Chances are you could get away with camping for a few nights without one. We were here for 9 days and didn’t get asked once to show our permit. A few campers live here full time it seems, they were friendly people. Other people store their RVS here for the winter, so it might look crowded but there is normally very few people actually camping. You hear some road traffic at night, and it gets pretty windy. All in all pretty peaceful place to camp. The stars at night are beautiful so make sure to check out the sky. Data coverage was spotty.

Beautiful place to stay. It is supposed to be for hunters and one guy said that being kicked out is possible but a few RV’s looked like they had been there quite a while.
Bottom line, it’s free and it is beautiful.

Who says there's no free camping in Florida. This spot was not quite free, but hey a season permit is only $28. Dry camping with shade, or open skies for solar. This area is a hunt camp, but it's mostly quiet with weekend hunters and seasonal snowbirds.

While pulling into a “site” (there are no assigned sites, just a wide open area that people fit themselves into, hopefully without blocking other campers’ access to the road), a woman sitting in front of a fifth wheel with several others yelled at us that generators were not allowed in the section we chose to park in. After we were set, my wife went to speak with them and they just got nastier and nastier. My wife pointed out that there wasn’t a sign prohibiting generators and was informed that there used to be but it was stolen. They suggested she look at the “pay board”. She said she’d read the whole board and there was nothing pertaining to the use of generators anywhere in the campsite and was told that “people who’ve been here know it.” One of the other people in the group informed her that we could run our generator at the risk of having our tires slashed.
It was clear that non-regulars are extremely unwelcone there. We decided that we didn’t want to choose between our batteries and our tires and left the next day.

Bring plenty of solar as the generators really destroy the peacefulness of the area. Some people run them all night - grrrr! Great free spot. 25 min to St Cloud and plenty of facilities. Cell Coverage is spotty but useable.
