I camped almost at the top of the mountain. The road in was rough. Only 2 sites are almost level. One was taken by a fifth wheeler, and the other one you have to drive down a steep dip. I camped almost at the top of the mountain. The road in was rough. Only 2 sites are almost level. One was taken by a fifth wheeler, and the other one you have to drive down a steep dip. I droved up towards the top of the mountain when I saw a little clearing. I tried to level my left rear tire with rocks. Wasn't level but tolerable. On top of Los Alamos. Can see it below my camp. Nice view of the lights at night.
Downside is there are some trash and lots of broken bottles. I saw a local threw a bottle out of his car window. Some locals were be noisy at 3am at least 3 of the nights i was there.
This was my camp when the snow storm hit. I got a video of it on YouTube.

Came on a Tuesday in early September and we were one of only 3 groups here. Very serene, clean toilets with toilet paper. Its a steep hill with rocky dirt road to get here but we managed in a Toyota sedan, no 4wd

Yes, as others have said the Camp May/Ski Hill Road is steep, and my Tundra struggled to pull our 7,000-lb trailer up some of the grades. Thus 3 stars for access. But it's worth it to get up to 9,300 feet and out of the heat. It's 10 degrees cooler than Los Alamos, and over 20 degrees cooler than the desert east of town. Sites are s... more
Yes, as others have said the Camp May/Ski Hill Road is steep, and my Tundra struggled to pull our 7,000-lb trailer up some of the grades. Thus 3 stars for access. But it's worth it to get up to 9,300 feet and out of the heat. It's 10 degrees cooler than Los Alamos, and over 20 degrees cooler than the desert east of town.
Sites are small, but our #5 was big enough for our 26-foot travel trailer with room to squeeze the Tundra next to it in the driveway and it didn't have the severe leveling challenges in some of the other sites. And we're nestled in a gorgeous aspen forest right at the base of some of Pajarito's ski slopes, with a couple of mountain biking trails 25 feet behind the rig. Spots near the top of the campground loop are more open. We're getting 3 bars of Verizon 4G, that slows down occasionally. Usually it's around 5.5 Mbps down/3.5 Mbps up unboosted.
There's zero signage about fees or how to pay for a site. As others have said, it's $10/night by paying at the Aquatic Center in town. The clerk there told me they're contemplating placing an automated kiosk in the campground, but for now there should at least be some signage!
Best of all, we're actually the only campers in the entire campground.
It's a short drive to town to pick up provisions at the Smith's Marketplace. Now, we've got Smith's at home in Utah, but I swear to God this is the most ridiculously amazing grocery I've ever been in anywhere. To wit, the bar (yes, serving multiple draft beers and wine, complete with TVs for entertainment) smack dab in the middle of the produce section. It has to be seen to be believed.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with this stop.

I wanted to make a correction: There is a fee to camp at Camp May. I think it's in the range of $15 and you have to pay the county. I would call the county 311 line for information. There is one spot that I believe you could get a decent sized RV into. It is steep to get up there but I think a good truck without 4x4 could do it. The dirt road is in pretty good shape. I've also seen RVs in the ski area lower parking lots that are just below Camp May

Located past the parking lots for the ski area, and 1700' higher than when you turned up the road from town, you'll find the Cape May camping area. It features a VERY steep and rutted gravel drive, very small sites - only one of which is large enough and level enough to handle a normal sized modern RV - IF YOU CAN GET THERE. If you're ... more
Located past the parking lots for the ski area, and 1700' higher than when you turned up the road from town, you'll find the Cape May camping area. It features a VERY steep and rutted gravel drive, very small sites - only one of which is large enough and level enough to handle a normal sized modern RV - IF YOU CAN GET THERE. If you're towing, you are absolutely going to want 4 wheel drive, even when it's dry.
There are three modern outhouse buildings scattered around the area, a couple bear proof garbage cans, with metal tables and metal fire rings at each site. If you really have your heart set on staying here, I'd drive it first without the RV to see for yourself if it will be possible with your rig. I know I couldn't get there with my trailer.
I'm giving it a single star because zero stars makes it look like I skipped over it.
