“Nice Site - If You Have Good Neighbors”

Reviewed 4/2/2023

Overall Rating

This campground is very nice, and we thought it was ideal until our neighbor turned up. The guy had a huge fire burning until the early hours, kept yelling at his kids not to annoy the neighbors, even though he was the problem. Even after his family went to bed, he sat by his inferno drinking heavily, and singing to the loud music he was playing. Worst of all, there did not seem to be any patrols and if there were, they did nothing. Otherwise, the place is clean and the pitches adequate. The shower block only had cold water and there were no dish washing sinks, although our pitch did have water. Great location for the falls and plenty of cute wildlife to see. We left a day early because of the person next to us, but that’s the risk you take when tent camping I suppose. We’d come back if we had a trailer.

“Lovely park, crowded sites, close to town”

The campground is 10 minutes from downtown Ithaca, yet it’s quiet and hidden away from non-campers. The falls are beautiful. There’s a good trail system.

The campsites are nearly all flat and have enough space for a van like ours, but any kind of RV would be a challenge. Better for tent camping.

That said, there’s no separation between sites. Just a marker on the road, and the sites aren’t huge. So be prepared to get to know your neighbors!

A site is technically just $20, but the reservation fee is another $9. NY, eh?

Paying for a campsite at any of the five state parks in the area gives you free access on the same day(s) to all the state parks. (Without a campsite, your $9 vehicle fee gets you into all the parks for the day.)

Buttermilk Falls State Park is right on the edge of Ithaca. You can see the main waterfall immediately after parking. A steep trail with stairs takes you to the top. All the NY state parks are dog friendly — just keep your dog on a 6-foot leash. If you are camping, you WILL be asked to show proof of rabies vaccination and a collar tag is not good enough; you will need the paper certificate.
