Are generators allowed here? I can find no mention on the USFS or Recreation.gov sites - either yea or nay. Thanks!

We had an incredible stay at this campground. It was so hard to believe that Santa Fe was only 15 minutes away!!!
We stayed at a walk-in campground (site #5) just off the road. It was the only site available for reservation at the time so we jumped on it. The campground was very busy that weekend; we were lucky to have it.
The individual campsites were wonderful! The setting for the walk-in sites was beautiful. Lots of trees, near a creek. Lots of birds and wildlife. So fun! The pads were asphalt with a concrete area surrounded by a beautiful brick wall. The tent pad was level and made of gravel. Nice picnic bench and fire pit included too.
There was quite of bit of noise from the road as we arrived on Saturday. That night was VERY busy. Lots of cars and lights in the woods. But Sunday night was much quieter. It was a beautiful place for sleeping. Even though there are lots of trees, there were breaks in the trees so we could see the stars through the net in our tent. So peaceful and beautiful Sunday night!
The only downside besides the weekend traffic sounds was the closest vault toilet was really smelly. It was summer after all (7/27-7/29) and it was next to the trailhead at the entrance of the campground. People didn't realize you had to close the door and the lid. Plus, I think it was just overwhelmed by the extra weekend hikers. Sometimes the smell drifted our way; thank goodness it was faint. When I needed the facilities, I just walked up to the next one up the campground road; it wasn't smelly.
Lots of hikes nearby... some within walking distance, some a short drive up the road. Lots of diversity even though you would think they would all be the same being in the same forest. That was not the case. Very enjoyable.
I would definitely stay here again. I would try for a campsite off the road if I were camping over the weekend, but otherwise, I would consider the walk-in again.

Very quiet campground, no traffic noise. Cool clean air. NO WATER available, bring everything you'll need for your stay. Terrific hosts. Gargage pick up is great. $10.00 per day, $5.00 with the usual national passes.

Black Canyon Campground may be the most beautiful Forest Service campground we’ve been to. 36 well-spaced sites in a picturesque setting, and only a 15 minute ride to the Plaza.
While the sites weren’t the most level, the site quality was high with the nicest picnic table we’ve seen and each site hemmed in by beautiful flagstone walls. It feels like the template for what every Forest Service Campground will be in the future.
There’s no cell service and the water is shut off, but if you come prepared it’s worth it.

Near a nice hiking trail
About 8,000 feet in elevation - gets cold at night even in late spring

We loved camping here! Typically sites need to be booked four days in advance, but occasionally they have first come first served sites available. We really wanted to stay here so we drove straight to the campground upon arriving to Santa Fe. We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and the nice campground hosts told us there might be a couple options left. We drove around and found beautiful site 17 still available. We dropped our $10 at the entrance and hung our reserved receipt back at the site. We went back into town for several hours and our site was still reserved for us. The campground is well maintained. There’s currently no water so bring your own. The vault toilets were fine. I recommend one of the outer edge sites as you feel more like you’re camping in the woods. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. It was super quiet at night. We stayed September 9th and while we had worn t-shirts and shorts all day in Santa Fe, it dropped to low 40s overnight in the campground. As mentioned by others, there is no cell service. Leaving the campground back toward Santa Fe it’s a good 10-15 minutes before our AT&T service came back. We would definitely stay here again and recommend for anyone wanting a basic campground in a stunning peaceful wooded location.

With that said, we loved this quiet FS campground that's just minutes from downtown Santa Fe. The roads are paved, the sites were level and the newer vault toilets were clean. We were in site 24 which is next to the Black Canyon Trail that makes a nice 1.6 mile hike that loops back to camp.

We tent camped at the height of the fall Aspen leaf-peeper season a year ago. Campground filled up about 8 pm on a weekday. Not as crowed as Hyde SP just up the road, and prettier. Decent level tent pad. Fairly quiet despite site being fairly close together - no teen peg parties (campground host present.) Walk-in tent sites are down right beside the highway. For that reason, we took a drive-in site deeper in the campground. Few sites are suitable for larger RVs, no hook-ups. Mostly vans and tents here. Half price with Senior (Golden Age, etc) pass.

This campground is one of the prettiest campgrounds I've seen. It's quiet, it's clean, it's paved. It has clean and nice smelling vault toilets. It has ample water spigots. It's close to Santa Fe (20 minutes) but it's away from all the bustle of the city. The campground is about 1000 feet above Santa Fe so it's a good bit cooler which is really nice.
We stopped in here for 2 nights on our way home from Colorado and I'm so glad we did. Santa Fe has so much to offer as far as history, architecture and charm. There's such a variety of shops, restaurants and tours...just bring your wallet, it's not cheap. If you're wanting to get outdoors, check out the hike up to Santa Fe Baldy and Lake Katherine at the top of the road that the campground is on. Check out my blog linked above for a full review!
