This is a free campground located right in the national park—an amazing and peaceful spot! Getting there can be a bit slow as the first few miles pass through a residential area with a very narrow, bumpy paved single road running alongside the river. There are some overhanging branches, but as long as you take it slow, it's manageable. We have a truck and a 22-foot travel trailer and had no issues, though it might be tricky if another rig were coming the opposite way, as there aren't any large pull-offs.
Once you reach the campground, it’s a loop with 10 regular sites and one designated handicap spot. The spots are all spaced out and large! The area is quiet, and the sound of the river is amazing. If it wasn’t so chilly it would have been wonderful to leave our windows open at night to hear it. Amenities include river access, dumpsters, and clean, well-maintained pit toilets. The campground is about 20 minutes from gas stations/ Dollar Generals and other stores, which offers propane and other necessities.
There’s no Verizon or T-Mobile service at the campground, but a quick 10-minute drive can get you connected if needed. Some campers had Starlink set up, which might be a good option if you have it.
We arrived around 4 p.m. on a Friday in November, and aside from the handicap site, the campground was completely full. It seemed like some of the tent campers might be living there long-term. We ended up parking in the main day-use lot for the night, and a spot opened up the next morning. Everyone we encountered was friendly, and we felt safe throughout our stay.
This is a very pretty and peaceful area—highly recommend it if you're looking for a free place to stay while visiting New River Gorge National Park!

The access road is very narrow and generally in bad shape with lots of potholes. You'd have issues with anything much longer than us and if anyone was coming from the opposite direction. Some hanging branches.

Agree with last reviewer assessment of drive into park. The first two miles in is a residential narrow paved road along the river. Some branches hang in the road but just need to take it slow. We are a 30 ft tow behind and made it fine. Would of been a challenge if another rig came in as there are no real pull offs to fit a large trailer. Once in campground it’s a loop. Only a few of the sites would accommodate us. Quiet, river bed access, dumpster, vault toilets. Your closest grocery is Walmart about 25-30 minutes out. Not much solar charge since it’s situated in a canyon and it’s November with shorter days and the sun is lower. No Verizon but good Starlink with the right site in an open sky.

Sites are gravel, fairly level & have table, grill & fire ring. Dumpster in the parking lot. Very quiet with only river, bird & cricket sounds. Wonderful night sky. Only a couple other campers in and out each day. Some sites are shady, some sunny spots for solar. Verizon has no internet; with WeBoost it was just enough to send text messages & calls, that's all. Central location for the NP, visitor center & bridge were about 30 minutes away. Beckley, with Walmart & all other shopping/services, is about 20 minutes away.

No hook ups of course but the pit toilets are clean, trash cans by the toilets and dumpster on the campground loop. A couple of the sites are more level than the others, we were in site 3 and didn’t have to level our 23 ft B+ RV. Cell coverage is basically non-existent on Verizon, occasionally we would be able to send or receive a text, no internet connectivity or voice service.

Not able to see the river from sites but can hear it. Able to go down and walk along river. Would return and recommend!
Had very spotty and poor Verizon service. Was able to get a few iMessages out.

This is a great little campground in the middle of New River Gorge. It's secluded and quiet and sites are spread out well.
The real only downside is access. The campground is in the very bottom of the river valley, which means a couple miles of very steep, very winding roads to get to. The last mile or so is EXTREMELY narrow. It's a 1 lane road with houses and steep banks. We made it with our 37' 5th wheel, but it was a slow careful ride. In a small truck or van it wouldn't be an issue though.
There's about 8 sites, and about 3 of them were large enough for our rig. The rest range in size but are all pretty spread out, so you get plenty of space. River access is just on the other side of the parking area with a nice large rock beach.
Cell service is virtually non existent. Our verizon phones got a sporadic 1 bar. My trucks OnStar (AT&T) got service and I could use it's wifi for checking email, but my AT&T hotspot got zero signal.

Stayed here for 7 days in late October and we will be back! The campsite layout and location on the bend of the New River easily makes this one of our favorite spots. It was quiet and clean. Nestled in the gorge, you can hear the soothing sounds of the river at all times. We made several trips to the rivers access point, or as we called it "the beach." The convenient central location made hiking in several different areas of the Gorge a breeze. It is around 20 mins to Beckley, which has all the amenities you might need. The road into the campsite is narrow, but we did not have any issues and there are areas for a vehicle (not towing) to pull to the side if need be. We highly recommend Army Camp Campground!
