Unfortunately, after I left, a friend texted me to let me know that ALL sites in this park will be reservation only in the future. I would imagine that you would still be able to go in and do some boondocking.

Nice campground. We stayed in the Stallion Campground. We had a huge campsite, very clean, and quiet. There are walking paths all over, lined with rocks. Beautiful cactus plants of many types. Clean showers.

We opted to stay down near the Rio grande river access area. This area was a bit more spacious and you could camp right on the river! We chose to back up to the river at the no hook up site. There is water available close by. We saw the most beautiful sunset that we’ve ever seen at this park! It was just a great base camp location to explore Las Cruces, Hatch, and truth or consequences! The dump station is up at the main park. As we drove through to dump, we saw that the other areas were just as picturesque. I don’t think you can go wrong at this park. Our only complaint is that you must drive quite a ways to get to the most sightseeing locations.

This was our second stay at Caballo. The park has multiple areas, and this time we stayed in Palomino which has better views and full hookups for $8 (with state park pass). This is a great place to recharge and dump after boon-docking. We were even able to fit in without unhooking our toad.

We stayed in a FHU site with 50 amp service (all of the sites in the Palomino campground are), and our site was gravel, level, and an easy pull through. Caballo Lake SP has a number of campgrounds and options including water/electric, primitive, and dispersed camping. Generally the sites are more spacious/private than a commercial park, but less than some other state parks we've visited. While all of the sites would have some view of the lake and surrounding mountains, site 4 is likely one of the best (no other camping between us and great scenery). The park offers the usual amenities, trash, some recycling, bathrooms, dump station, and some well marked trails, and each site has a covered picnic table and grill. While Palomino stayed nearly empty during our stay, neighboring campgrounds were fairly full and all was still very quiet. The camp host came by on the first day, the rangers circulate regularly, and everyone we interacted with was nice and helpful.

We stayed near the boat launch in November. There was plenty of room. It was clean and very quiet with lots of room to walk. Riverside to the south has more for kids. We paid $4 with our state pass which includes water, 30 amp, and free dump station on the way out.

We saw the good reviews about this campground and decided to give it a try. We entered the park and parked our RV to walk through the loops and check out the sites. The Palamino loop was confusing on how to pull into the sites and there were two campers with people playing loud music and working on their boats. Really tight with little privacy. We proceeded to the middle loop, Appaloosa, and the sites are lined up so campers pull in a line around the perimeter with front windows looking at the person in front of you and back windows looking at the camper in back of you and the curb side facing the picnic table and next to the people on either side of you. The center is open and provides for traffic in and out along with dust. No privacy or views. The last loop, Stallion, was nice but closed for the season. Vegetation between sites and separated from the main area of the park. We would consider returning if we could get a site in this loop. The restrooms were clean and accessible.
We toured the dry camping areas and saw several sketchy setups looking more like a homeless camp. We proceeded to Riverside and found it to be in need of an update, lots of fisherman traffic/dust and unlevel sites.
This was not the experience we were looking for so we did not end up staying and continued on our trip. If you don't mind being stacked in with your neighbors in an tight, open setting, and dealing with the traffic of day visitors to the reservoir, then this place will work for you.

We spent our first week in the Appaloosa campground above the lake. It was not especially interesting. There were nice views of the water and the boat ramp was in walking distance. There were numerous walking paths from which one could tour the local cacti... (although if the cacti interest you then you MUST see Oliver Lee SP in May!) ...and there were many species of birds visiting my feeder, including finch, quail, and desert cardinals.
In our second week, we moved to the river campground south of the dam. The layout of this campground was more spacious, and more of the sites had shade trees. There are several site with full hook-ups and numerous primitive sites along the river bank. We had a developed site with a good view of the playground, and beyond that my partner had easy access to the river to fish (NM fishing license purchased at the WalMart in TorC) We did catch dinner once or twice.
We will go straight to the river campground in the future.

This is my second time staying here. First time was for 4 nights during the winter in the Palomino Loop and it was so peaceful that I decided to go again. This time I stayed two nights in the Stallion Loop in space 33. This park is nice, but if you have a 50 AMP unit I highly recommend staying in Palomino if you need electric service. It was almost 90 yesterday and my AC couldn’t keep up with the 30 AMP service so I turned on generator, which cooled it right down.
I also recommend that you closely look at the site on Google before selection. I was in Stallion 33 and it was tight getting my 42’ toy hauler out (getting in was fine, but the bush was scraping the sides going out). Another option if you don’t mind boondocking is to stay in the primitive areas. Peaceful and some have great views.
