The dirt road into this area can get very "washboard" so be prepared to take it slow. The views from every campsite are great: sweeping canyon and desert vistas. The night skies are awesome as are the sunsets! Winds in New Mexico can be brutal, so face masks and head coverings are often a necessity. But overall, free camping in the desert doesn't get any better than this.

Sunrises and sunsets are absolutely beautiful and so are the daytime canyon views from our BLM picnic table. Very quiet with 3-5 pickup trucks passing by per day.
This one will be on our short list for the Four Corners area.

I spent 7 years in the Northwest corner of NM (Farmington) in the early 70's. I had truly forgot how breath taking Angel Peak is. You have to experience it to understand. I know there are many treasures across this vast country and A.P. is one of them. We will come back!

I'm glad we stuck it out and made it to the end. It was such a beautiful view that we decided to move some days around on our trip and spend a second free-of-charge night. The views were spectacular, especially an early morning sunrise over the canyons. Ants (huge ones) were a constant fight, however. I don't specifically remember our cell coverage as we were enjoying being off-grid.

We were here the last week in August 2018 - was planning on staying 2 nights but was so peaceful and beautiful that we stayed 4 nights - we had the last and largest spot right on the edge of the canyon - gorgeous views and no security lights or street lights to block the amazing night skies - there was only two other campers there for a couple of nights so we literally had the place all to ourselves - some people drove around the loop a few times and some of the oil workers drove by a couple of times but the peace and quiet was awesome. nice picnic shelters at the site and plenty of room to roam - had seen it on Youtube and knew we would love it and we did

This is a beautiful, primitive CG! We noted the sign to Angel Peak Scenic Area/ RD 7175 heading east 15 miles south of Bloomfield. The 6-mile unpaved road to the CG was good with a few washboard areas where we reduced our speed. Signage was good. Views of the canyon along the road were impressive. The end of the road is a loop with 9-10 campsites and a few parking areas for picnics. The sites vary in size and are spaced apart nicely with some desert shrub/trees for additional privacy. All are dirt. Some are level, most need some leveling. There's no shade at the campsites, although there are patio covers at the picnic area tables. There's a pit toilet. All are a short walk to the rim of the canyon. Sites on the north side of the loop have the best views. There's good ATT and Verizon coverage. We had planned to stay for one night and extended our stay to 2 nights. Great place to chill!
There are several trails around the rim and into the canyon. There are also miles of dirt roads for walks.

The road in is rough but not as bad as most.

There are only 2 or 3 spots that we could fit into and the one we got was huge, I believe it could be used as a double but the campground wasn't busy so we had no problems. The road in off the highway was quite 'washboardy' which I don't like. It took us a while to drive the 10Km (6 miles) in because we took it very slow in spots. I guess the road is graded at times so it could be much better. The only other down side is the pump houses used by the oil/gas companies. There is one not too far from the campground and it runs 24/7, not really loud, just a constant hum in the background - kind of like a neighbor a few campsites down running their generator.
The views from the campground are spectacular! If you are the adventurous type there is a hike/path that leads out on one of the ridges. I didn't go all the way out to the end but did see several people way out there.

If you want to reach the campground for tent camping, just continue past the 3 picnic areas and you'll reach it. You can't miss it since the road goes in loop. You can also camp in you car / RV in one of the picnic area. I recommend the third one because it's very large. There are vault toilets but no running water. So bring you own water.
This place was really windy when I was there (late March) but still worth it
