Arrived late on a Tuesday night to only one other van. Plenty of space. No amenities but a really pretty spot by the lake. We tent camped, there were spurs in the grass and ant hills but just avoided them. No trash lying around despite the lack of trash cans. A few other people pulled up in the morning to fish.

I drove here thinking I’d stay for the night. There were lots of beer bottles and trash all around. It just wasn’t very appealing so decided not to stay. Drove to another spot 1 ½ hours west

Place is dry camping. Dog friendly. Unlevel. At some spots you get cell service we are T-Mobile and Sprint. Wild life to look at. Quiet and peaceful. Good view of the lake. Small campers. Had a few large camper camping sites. Activity of fishing, kayaking , boating. Swimming? Had a wonderful time.

There was one other RV here when we arrived. They looked to be camping for a few days as they went out on their kayaks in the morning. We didn’t venture down the dirt road because we didn’t want the hassle for just one night. We stayed in the paved area near the boat ramp. It was lovely for an overnight in the middle of no where. The peaceful night was very welcome after 4 nights of noisy Cracker Barrel’s.
We saw 3 people come in to fish and a fish and wildlife ranger drive through in the morning. We felt very safe. No one bothered us and some waved hello while we walked our dogs. AT&T had 1-2 bars, Verizon had 2-3.
The paved parking area is on a hill so you won’t be completely level but it’s doable. We are a 28’ Airstream and had no accessibility issues. The paved road right before the lake is a little rough but nothing to worry about.

This is an Oklahoma fish and wildlife area. If you don't have an Oklahoma fishing or hunting license, and the game warden catches you, it will cost !!!

When I went there were a handful of other families, kids. It was a good spot to go for some view, to fish, or even get in the lake. The picture of the white gravel road is accurate. Little word of caution, pay attention to your surroundings. I witnessed a guy in cold weather being dropped, going into the woods, and only wearing a t-shirt. Seemed odd to me as him and a previous guy circled through earlier. Would I say it’s unsafe, well no but just keep an eye out on what’s going on. As with any area you stay if something doesn’t feel right, leave. That’s what I did!

We needed a place to spend the night while traveling west on I-40. We had read about American Horse on Campendium, but thought it might be too far from the highway. We drove through the nearby KOA, but chose to keep going. American Horse is about 28 minutes north and then west of the highway. The road is great for most of the drive. The pavement for the last few miles is OK, but rougher, then when you turn left to the lake the road the road has some potholes, so you’ll go slower up the hill. We turned left on a gravel road right at the sign and drove to the lake where we camped. There are several places to pull off the gravel road to camp, but many would require a more capable off-road setup than ours. I’d suggest walking those sites to insure you can get in with a trailer. 4 wheel drive and a tent would be easy. At the end of the gravel drive is an easy turnaround and we turned there and backed our trailer down to the lake. We enjoyed the site as it had a great view of the lake and is very peaceful. We walked the other camp sites and believe there were only two others we may have been able to get into. By the way, the stickers are sharp and plentiful in the area. They seem capable of jumping on you, and they certainly jumped on our dog. None-the-less we had an peaceful, restful experience and would stay here again.

Clear night, with beautiful sky. Windy during the day but the night was calm and very quiet.
Dry camping only and level sites rare. More of a tent camping area but our 24 foot sprinter had no troubles navigating the area. Originally planned one night but stayed two! Plenty of grass and tall Oaks with cement concrete tables at the grassy campsites. Our dog also enjoyed it. Although several of little thorny stickers always found a way to get caught in his hair.
