This place is a backpacker's paradise, we unfortunately are not! This place has some challenges but none that would deter us from visiting here again.
About an hour north of El Paso, and 45 minutes west of White Sands National Park. This little "anchor point" was the perfect for location to do some easy to extremely challenging hikes inside the dripping springs natural area, visit the national park, Cloudcroft which is amazing little mountain town you've never heard of(go to the brewery), and El Paso!
I will say, Las Cruces is a mirage among the barren land of NM you typically see, and up until that point, the whole drive in. Million dollar multi-acre estates line the roads and hillside as you pass through to the BLM portion of dripping springs rd. Just before you enter the opening to the mountain pass you will see an opening on your right hand side (assuming you're coming from the town) that is lined by thick wooden poles that maintain the newly installed rope fencing that encloses the area.
The road in is unpaved, but very manageable for even the most fragile of frames. There are spots that line both sides of the road that vans and small class-Cs can fit into. Now for the bigger rigs, and especially travel trailers, be extremely mindful of going too far. There is a square parking lot at the end of the maintained road that larger rigs can fit into. However there is a major challenge of turning around once you have reached this point if the area is busy. There was a quite a bit of traffic while we were there, and actually timed our departure for when some of the rigs that lined the lot had left.
There are plenty of tent and van camping spots past the maintained portion of the road. These spots can promise great views, privacy and quiet, but also may get you into more trouble than its worth. I personally had to tow out a van that couldn't make the turn and caused a bit of damage to their paint job. So proceed at your own risk.
The views of the desert landscape on one side and a gorgeous eastern mountain face made all these challenges pale in comparison. We definitely recommend going at the slower times to ensure you get a good spot if you're in a rig with less flexibility (and mobility). This is a spot where you do want to bring some fly traps, but not too bad. We had great neighbors, with awesome rigs, and would definitely recommend folks check out this spot for a few nights.

It is basically a large and leveled dirt parking lot located right off of the highway. Although it is located right off the highway, it is far enough away that you don't hear the noise. There is a very large dumpster on site which was extremely convenient. The local rv park (located near the entrance of the Carlsbad Caverns) allowed us to fill and dump our tanks. It is about 40 miles to the closest big box stores, but there is a gas station not too far away if you need anything small. The Carlsbad Caverns are just a short drive away which was a huge win and a must see! The area around the campground is an open range and has cows on it. There were none near our campsite, but we drove up the road about 2 miles and found cows on the range.

This is a beautiful area and would be nice to stay if you can get a good spot but even with only a few other rigs there, it is cramped and inaccessible. As others have said there is now a fence either side of the gravel road with only a few pull in spots available. All spots are right on the gravel road and there was traffic, even later at night. There’s a large parking lot at the end and there were also several rigs parked up in this, meaning turning around to get out was very difficult. We just about did it with our 30ft trailer but if there’d been one more car there we would have been totally stuck. I’d highly recommend pulling into the loop by the main road and walking down the track to scout out before you drive down it, you should be fine in a van or small Motorhome but I’d be wary for anything bigger or towing at all. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon In Feb and it was full, I’m not sure if it’s busier than usual with people escaping the snow storms in Texas. There’s very few other options in this area if you don’t have a good off road set up so I would be cautious about planning a trip around this location.

Campsites are six feet off the gravel road. Zero privacy, only a half a dozen or so spots to choose from. Very sad. I honestly don’t even know how these pullouts can be called campsites.

We stayed for one night. Got there around 4pm on a Thursday and there was only one space to park a trailer. The lights of Las Cruces were beautiful at night. Nice spot and we plan to stop here again on our way to Arizona.

We have a 32' with a tow vehicle and stayed in a tight loop, but we still unhitched to turn around. Absolutely gorgeous mountain views and distant city lights. Would love to stay here again!

Coming from Las Cruces, this is the first of 3 dispersed areas along Dripping Springs and Baylor Canyon roads. We stayed on a Friday night and were worried we wouldn’t find a spot. Every site was taken along the way until the trailhead. We decided to squeeze in and just sleep in the car, instead of risking our luck with the next two areas.
Easy to find, even in the dark. Nice views of the mountains and a trail right there, if you wanted to do some walking or biking.
This was fine for a quick, one-night stay. I’d prefer to have one of the actual sites and be able to pitch the tent if we were staying any longer. Too close to our neighbors for my liking, but in a pinch, it was a great spot!

Nice sites hidden from the road. People around but not too crowded. Easy to find (even at night) and road accessible for all vehicles. We tent camped, and there were a couple of other people doing the same. Would stay here again!
