My partner Hans did the first review of this campground since we decided to post it on Campendium. He has done a detailed review, but I’m going to add a few extras.

The community park aside the RV sites has a long beach. We saw some boaters launch their small boats from the beach, but it is very shallow for quite a distance out. There is another boat launch approximately 1 km away. They charge $5.30 Canadian to launch your boat from there.

The community park has a covered picnic area with electricity, it has a restroom with running water and flush toilets but no showers. Very clean.

The free dump station and water are used extensively by people here and from Paarens Provincial Park Campground. When we were here, there was a sign posted to boil the water for one minute. Someone told us this was due to the fact that they were working on the lines. We only put the water through our filter system.
There are two playgrounds in the community park. Across from the RV area there is an elementary school. It has three nice playgrounds behind it along with a huge field. We played catch with our dog up there.
There are two grocery stores in town and a thrift store that had very reasonable merchandise along with books that were by donation. There’s also a library in town as well.
DO NOT MISS THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK where they have restored buildings of the Hudson Bay Company
Check in time at the campground is noon check out time is 11. Quiet hours are from 11 PM to 9 AM. There is a limit on the days you can stay, on the front four campsites it is 14 days on the back five campsites it is a month.

The only downside to this campground is that there is no shade, although you have access to your air conditioning. There are no trees for hammocks.

There was a black bear roaming the area for 4 to 5 days. Apparently this is a regular bear that comes to the area. Two people told us that they have been unable to catch him but I don’t know why? He ignores people, but leaves his poops all over the place.

“GEM AT THE END OF THE ROAD”

We found this place in 2016 on our way to Alaska. At that time, it was essentially a grassy lot. Since then, the town has improved the campground to include four 50A lakefront sites and five 30A sites a short distance away. They appear to be in the process of adding water to each site; the piping is in. There is a nearby FREE dump station with potable water.

There is no shade in the entire campground which is a change from the forested campgrounds we have been staying in all summer in BC. So there’s great sky access for STARLINK. Note that your dishy will point SOUTH this far north. There is also decent cell service at the campground.

Both times we’ve been here we’ve stayed in the lakefront sites. They are located about 200’ from the water along a rocky beach where you can launch kayaks and paddle boards. When we were there in the first week of August, the water was so warm that swimming was a delight. The sandy beach a few hundred feet south in the community park is a locals favorite. Everyone has their dogs off-leash and all of the canines love playing with one another.

This is such a wonderful place to stay that we extended our four night stay to eight. The four 50A sites are $30/night, the five 30A sites are $25. You can’t beat that price. Several of the other people who pulled in had no reservations and were amazed to find availability. That may change now that this “hidden gem” is no longer hidden. It is now on Campendium and Wikicamps; our neighbors put it on the latter site. To make reservations, call the visitor center in town and they’ll give you the phone number to the hosts which at the time of our stay was a collection of local high school students. They were always available and on the ball.

Access is on Highway 27, an excellent road, 62km/37miles north of Vanderhoof on Highway 16. This town and campground are worth the detour if you’re heading to Alaska on the western Canada route. The town goes a long way to welcome visitors. There’s a Save-On Foods market that provides all the amenities you’d need. There is a farmers market every Friday night somewhere in town; we didn’t get a chance to visit it. Once a month they include music and hold it in the huge parking lot adjacent to the campground.

There is a mountain biking trail system less than a mile away. And there’s a mondo hike to the top of Pope Mountain less than 10 minutes away by car. It’s a steep 8-mile RT hike so be ready.
