This is the second time all the sites surrounding #21 is filled with at least 25 people, dogs and kids. Thier quiet hour extends till 12:30. The rangers and hosts enforce nothing. Tents, tables, wash stations expand to all available space. Only state park not near a highway in all 45 states we have stayed in where ear plugs are needed ... more
This is the second time all the sites surrounding #21 is filled with at least 25 people, dogs and kids. Thier quiet hour extends till 12:30. The rangers and hosts enforce nothing. Tents, tables, wash stations expand to all available space. Only state park not near a highway in all 45 states we have stayed in where ear plugs are needed to sleep. If a site near the group camp area is your only option I recommend you go somewhere else.

Lots of great tree shade. Bathroom and showers are as good as any state park. Showers are free as of August 2023. A few big rigs coming and going seem to have no problem. Path to the beach is close and simple. Playground for kids is down by the beach but not by the campsite. Lots of bike riding space for kids on the camp loops. Just ... more

Just out of the park is a store with overpriced essentials if you forget anything. Also coin laundry.
Cell service at camp sites is up and down.

I’ve been car camping in Washington for a little over a year and have hit some great places and it’s time to add another one to that list, “Birch Bay State Park.”
Located about 90 miles north of Seattle, it’s oh so close to the Canadian Border, you can see our neighbors to the north easily. This was a really good Washington State Park and one that I would recommend without a doubt.
Here’s the 411 on the trip:
This was just a quick overnight stay, but I could have easily stayed a week or longer. For the 1 night after taxes it worked out to be $70.00 which was really $40.00 dollars per night, I added my yearly Discover Pass for $30 dollars, hence the total price
I stayed in site #115… The site was easy to get into, and right across from one of the bath houses. The neighbors are a little close, but the trees and plants do provide some privacy.
Cell service was great. I was able to use my phone all trip. I have AT&T.
The facilities: The park has 147 campsites, 20 partial hookup sites, a dump station, eight restrooms, and 18 showers. Maximum site length is 60 feet (limited availability).
Campsites are reservable between May 15 – Sept. 15
I was easily able to book my reservation online at: https://washington.goingtocamp.com/
According the website:
“Staying overnight? The friendly campgrounds, basketball court and environmental education programs in summer ensure fun for the whole family. If you’re looking for a side trip, the U.S.- Canada border town of Blaine and the fascinating Peace Arch State Park are only 9 miles north, and the lively university city of Bellingham is 20 miles south. You can always spend an evening in town and return to the beachy bliss of Birch Bay.”
This is a park, you’ll want to check out for sure!

This campground has nice views of Birch Bay. Lots of trees and privacy and space for some, but not all sites. This campground has nice views of Birch Bay. Lots of trees and privacy and space for some, but not all sites. It has a peaceful vibe…but, when we went to sleep in our tent we could hear this constant rumble noise. At first I thought it was a long train, but it just kept going on and on all night. It was bizarre because the park is in a rural area, 10 km from Blaine and 25 km from Bellingham. It wasn’t until the next day when we drove into Bellingham that we realized there is a massive BP Cherry Point oil refinery and deep sea port only two kilometres from the campground! The constant rumble was the refinery, the oil tanker generators and the tanker trains carrying 250k barrels of oil a day!

However the rates have increased. Smaller sites without view, W & S are $25/night. Larger sites are now $40 with W, S and view. You must also have a Washington State pass for $10 for 1 night or $30/year.

I drove in at dusk and wasn’t clear on how it worked. It was self registration. I parked in a $$ spot, but worked out to switch to a different one the next morning, with a very friendly and accommodating park ranger. The sites are very well kept. I parked in a $$ spot, but worked out to switch to a different one the next morning, with a very friendly and accommodating park ranger. The sites are very well kept. The leaf blower is the only real noise and doesn’t last all day. If they didn’t clear the small paved roadway, it would become slick and muddy with pine needles and leaves. I’m impressed with the care for the grounds as well as the clean facilities and approachable staff!

Site 19 was huge and we used for most of our meals and nightly campfires. All sites were mostly level, with gravel parking, fire ring with BBQ grate, and picnic table. Campground was clean and bathroom/showers were spotless. The beach area was a short walk down a paved path and the beach itself is amazing! Great for kayaking, paddle boarding, beach combing and swimming. They had lots of picnic tables and BBQ pedestals, playground, and big grassy open areas. Will definitely be back!

We stayed at Birch Bay for 20 days in September/October and it served as a lovely base to visit Bellingham and the area. You're staying in the forest, so it can be a bit dark and cold, but it's also beautiful and the trees protected us from several wind storms that passed through. We stayed at Birch Bay for 20 days in September/October and it served as a lovely base to visit Bellingham and the area. You're staying in the forest, so it can be a bit dark and cold, but it's also beautiful and the trees protected us from several wind storms that passed through. The gorgeous tidal beach of Birch Bay is this campground's literal backyard and making the short walk from the woods to the shore felt like a luxury every day. The campground was mostly quiet except for occasional leaf blower use by the rangers, which seemed unnecessary.
Check in and reservations were also tricky in the off season (starting Sept 15th) as it's first come first served, but is just based off paper and an iron ranger, so there's possibility for confusion. If you're staying for a while and don't want to reserve every day with cash, the ranger station is staffed (very briefly) at 12pm, so you can pay with card.
The bathrooms were clean with coin-operated showers (50¢ for 3 min) that weren't the best but got the job done.
Site 30 is a lovely spot with extra room. We were able to work remotely every day with both Verizon and AT&T. One of my favorite features of this campground is the incredible bird life, from loons in the bay, to herons in the creek, and huge owls in the trees overhead.

Lovely park, with a lovely campground host and lovely park rangers. The bathrooms were immaculate. Sites were clean (although somewhat muddy due to the nature of winter weather). Will definitely come back again! Lovely park, great walk to the beach, lovely views and pretty spacious sites. My husband is a disabled veteran and we camp for free in Washington State Parks. Site quality would have been 5 with water turned on....

Overall Rating
Very fun park but you will be very close to others. Fun for groups since you'll be by friends. Or last trip had a group that kept everyone up past midnight with music and yelling.
Awesome beach in the summer. Great for walking and biking.
