Overview of Roan Mountain State Park Campground
The Roan Mountain State Park pool will not reopen as of Summer, 2022. Unfortunately, the pool is 41 years old, visitation is down, and the park currently lacks adequate lifeguard positions. Due to these factors, Tennessee State Parks can no longer justify to Tennessee taxpayers the costs associated with keeping this pool in operation. However, we are excited to have the opportunity to invest in a more fiscally responsible outdoor recreation option at Roan Mountain State Park that would provide year-round benefits.

The campground was in a good location to reach much of the trailheads you'll want to visit. Not much cell service within campground and we didn't have our weboost so not sure how that would have helped. Best to come with some movies downloaded incase there's not great weather.
If you're coming for the rhododendron festival you'll need to book as soon as it opens as it fills right up.
Upper loops for smaller rigs and a lower loop for larger rigs. Larger rigs would not be able to make the turns in the upper loops even if the sites are long enough. Would stay in lower loop if longer than ~26 feet.

Relatively private because sites are terraced on a hill. # 71 would likely not fit a trailer or RV longer than 28 ft. Ours is a 22 ft. Spectacular vista's and adventure hiking trails. The road South is sencic and leads to Bakersville, where you'll find some of NC's best potters. A coupld of very good art/craft galleries, Intandem is worth the drive from Roan.
Its a good kick back place to beat the Summer heat in the lower elevations.

I want to comment on connections in particular. I had zero luck within my travel trailer on this site, connecting to AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. The campground Wi-Fi works great during the day, from early morning until evening, then disappears! We stayed Saturday and Sunday nights. I assumed that on Saturday, the loss of Wi-Fi was due to a full campground when everyone was online. But it happened again on Sunday when our loop was about 2/3rds full. Still, the connection was great when it worked!
I have a 28' TT and had no problem getting it into site #68. Sites are well-designed and they make the most out of the topography. The Men's room in our loop closest to us had one toilet and one urinal. Very clean but limited in capacity. But there are two separate facilities in the loop.
Great location for access to Roan Mountain and the AT for hiking.
I should mention that I have an AT&T data service on my Ford truck that is always reliable even when I can't get cell service. No luck here though! No OTA TV channels and no radio stations. Great place to escape!

I had not anticipated 'cool' & so was delighted. We were able to keep the windows open & use a blanket at night. This was especially appreciated as we had come from hot & humid. I was looking for a place to go at the last minute. Based on comments from other campers we were very lucky to get a site. This campground is very popular & we know why. We stayed in the bottom area. This is an idyllic setting; many large trees, grassy, peaceful, & just overall picturesque. You can see your neighbors but they are not so close that you can hear their conversations. The bath house was older but very clean. There are upper camping sites. These are in the woods & up a tight, steep & twisty incline. Campers have been severely damaged trying to leave. You should really talk with the reservation person before you book an upper site & have a larger camper before booking online. Roan Mountain is nearby & offers several trails. Also, the campground offers many trails. The campground does offer a password to their wifi but I heard that it was not very good so we did not even try; instead we talked to one another. After 43 years we still had stuff to talk about. :))

As others have mentioned, there is a lower loop for bigger rigs (still nice sites just closer together and less privacy) and then two upper loops for smaller trailers and tents. We have a 24' trailer and a Tundra and had no problem going up the incline and making the turn around the bathhouse, or backing into our site. It was actually a quite easy back-in, even though you are backing uphill and turning into the site. We do live in the NC mountains though so hills are the norm for us. Anyway, I personally liked the top loop sites much better, they were spaced way farther apart and had much more privacy. The asphalt pad was fairly level already which was nice. The downside of our site (and quite a few others we saw) was that there was minimal level space under the awning, so if it's raining you're limited in outside seating space. We were able to fit two camp chairs only if turned sideways and moved right up against the camper. Other than that the outside area was very spacious. The top loops were also incredibly quiet. We walked down to a couple of the hiking trails which were nice, and also drove to the carvers gap, Appalachian trail hike over the balds which I highly recommend! No Verizon cell service, but the free wi-fi worked well at the site, good signal just not super high speed.

As of Thursday it is becoming crowded, busy and sometimes noisy in A section again. They weed whacked the grassy areas and blowed quite a bit today.
We had a great 4 mike hike from our site early. We’ve found it easy to do laundry.
We discovered free but insecure WiFi that works well some of the time. No cell except a bit on our morning hike.
We’ve stayed on site last 2 days due to both weather and gas shortage.
Leaving tomorrow.
