Overall Rating
Stayed 5/1/17. This campground has developed sites with picnic tables and fire pits. Our site backed up to a rock formation that was pretty cool to check out. There were pit toilets available. There is a 30ft maximum length limit. It was a beautiful campground. We would gladly stay again.

This is a great place to camp and explore some scenic desert. It’s currently not reservable but when we arrived on a Thursday most of the spots were empty. It was very nice and quiet until Friday night when it filled up mostly. It’s not specifically an off road area but it’s adjacent to one so on the weekend there were off road vehicle... more
This is a great place to camp and explore some scenic desert. It’s currently not reservable but when we arrived on a Thursday most of the spots were empty. It was very nice and quiet until Friday night when it filled up mostly. It’s not specifically an off road area but it’s adjacent to one so on the weekend there were off road vehicles coming and going which could be a bit noisy during the day. I would definitely camp here again since it’s so close to LA.

We have stayed here several times over the years - incredible geology, scenery, stars, hikes - just lovely. Pit toilets, garbage service - some sites are hard to level and I wouldn't recommend a huge RV - we have a 19' Rpod and have been fine here - had to be creative leveling a couple of times. Visitor center well worth a visit!

I woke up to a great sunrise over the mountains and gorgeous views. There were other RVs there but it seemed like they were miles away. I would recommend and stay again.
There is no cell service, but I was able to use my wifi range extender to pickup the free wifi from the visitor center.

I’m of two minds about this place. It’s dry camping with pit toilets for $25 a night when there is lots of BLM land within a few miles that is free and less crowded. I’m of two minds about this place.
It’s dry camping with pit toilets for $25 a night when there is lots of BLM land within a few miles that is free and less crowded. Yes the geology is nice and wandering in the canyons is fun but you don’t have to stay here to do that.
Yes the visitor center has WiFi, but if you camp in the nicest spots next to the cliff you are too far away for a solid signal without a WiFi repeater/booster....and when there are lots of folks around the throughout gets slow. And there is lots of good cell signal other places in the area, and even on the ridge south of the campground itself, visible from the campground, but no cell signals in the campground....so if you need to get online, you gotta make do with the visitor center offering....which is better than many commercial Rv parks.
Yes there is a dump station but your camping fee doesn’t cover it.
Yes there is fresh water... but not at the dump station even after you pay 20$ to dump. It’s from spigots designed to prevent filling an Rv.
Yes a few of the sites can handle larger rigs, and the narrow one way road through the campground is mostly well graded gravel, but some sections are washed out, and many sites can be challenging to level in...and since you can’t reserve a spot, showing up midweek and not during a super bloom is going to be your best bet if you must have such a spot.
But compared with many California state parks the sites are well sized, and the layout is relatively spacious and it doesn’t seem to be consistently full up, so if for some reason you prefer that to boondocking, it’s not a bad choice.
That said, it’s quiet when the jets aren’t flying overhead and on weekdays when the orv crowd is not present. And it’s got a nice dark sky other than the highway in the distance.

Not easy to level there, I’m in a 30 foot class A, just dry camping, pit toilets. They have free Wifi but it’s open not secured so be careful, I just used it to watch amazon prime. The dump station is now working $20 to dump with a credit card. Place can get a little dusty when windy but reasonably quiet with quiet hours 8PM to 10AM.

You come here for the location, pure and simple. This is far an away one of the best California State Park campsites with regards to how close you are able to get to the geological features of the area. You come here for the location, pure and simple. This is far an away one of the best California State Park campsites with regards to how close you are able to get to the geological features of the area. We were easily able to park our 25ft trailer so that we had an incredible up close view of the rock formations. Arriving on a Tuesday at 5pm we nearly had our pick of spots, we did a "head count" and we were 1 of 11 occupied spots.
The sewage portion of the dump is locked/operated electronically through the use of an access card that I am GUESSING is acquired from a visit to the small park office located at the campground. They were closed during our visit Tuesday 4/9/19 so there was no way we could see to use the "dump" portion of the dump. They did have a non-potable water spigot available but the potable spigot had a cap on the threads. We unscrewed the cap and hooked up our own hose and were able to fill our fresh water tank.
There is a posted sign that water fill-up is $6 IF you have NOT paid to stay in the campground. However an additional sign made it appear that to dump your black/grey tank would cost $20 and require an access card regardless if you had paid to camp there.
We had very high winds (30mph-40mph with 70mph gusts) and had to park our truck in the empty adjacent site to act as a wind break. We genuinely thought our trailer was going over!

Still this is an absolute gem of a spot!
The location is superb for hiking, photography, birdwatching, and mountain biking. The offroad driving looks to be a blast. There is a comfortable amount of space between campsites. Did I mention the location is top-notch?
P.S. Potable water is available is available to the side of the restrooms and trashcans are spaced along the main road.

This is our 2d stay at RRCSP, which we stumbled onto last year by accident. Gorgeous red/pink/orange rock formations, pink sunrises and breathtaking sunsets. We had our pick of the spots last year and stayed in #50. This year we broke our “must be at campground by 1” rule figuring it would be empty (for a Monday) and arrived at 6p. The place was practically full! Probably because this little hidden gem is no longer hidden, and due to reports of the super-bloom. Driving through the park, like magic, “our spot” - #50 - was empty! Probably because it takes 5 feet of blocks to level the dang trailer, but hey - isn't that what levels are for people?? Yes, some of the spots are not perfectly level. Warm warm warm during the day, and chilly at night. There is NO water and dump station is not available (at least during the week.) The visitors center is open Friday-Sunday only which was a bummer because Mama wanted swag. Hubby was happy, tho, because the park now has WIFI and he could still work (and watch Netflix...hehheh.)

This was a stop over for us on our way to Death Valley. Dry camping only. Made reservation online. Sites are chosen when you arrive. So we were told to drive around, find a spot, unhitch and go back to checkin to get paperwork for chosen site. I bit of a pain, but okay. There was ZERO AT&T service. Sites are clean, but very few are level. We had to raise the front of the trailer considerably to get an acceptable level. The place was pretty empty on a Sunday night. IT was COLD! 21 degrees at night. Our heater ran all night. There is great four wheeling all around if you are into that. We did a short loop trail across the highway (Red Cliffs). There is BLM land down the road that we may try next time to save the money.
