I really cannot say enough good things about Petro/TA Truck stop for RVers. We are new to this and were only 50 miles from home giving Clara Bell a final shakedown towing Blu before we set out in earnest on the first full time trip to Maine.
We actually went there two different days this month, once on the shakedown outbound leg and then outbound after a moochdock. The first time we stayed over at the travel center/truck stop it was quite a good experience. There are eight 50-amp back-in big rig spots that easily accommodated our 36-foot class “A”; there are also a dozen or so overnight parking spots for vans/small Bs and Cs. The spots with electricity were $25. Second time we were outbound again and stopped there just to dump; the dump price was $10 and is really easy to back into. The stay over was convenient and we felt really safe. Now my wife thought it was noisy, I was fine with it and it did not smell like diesel that I could tell.
As for the Travel Center/Truck Stop area, it was clean, well lit, open and airy and very nicely laid out. From the main entry the Trucker/Travel store is to the right and the Iron Skillet restaurant to the left. More about the Iron Skillet in a moment, but the Travel/Trucker store was large and well stocked. You could grab a hot dog or pre packaged sandwich and all the chips and goodies you would want. It was better stocked than most mini marts. Everything was neat and clean, and a competitor up the street that touts the “Best Coffee on the Interstate,” has some work to do if they want to keep that title, because Petro’s coffee was one of the best I’ve had in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area and I was a delivery driver in that area, so I’ve had coffee at a lot of different places and I’ll give them number one in my book.
Now as to the Iron Skillet restaurant, the food and service was second to none. Portions were large (we took out leftover containers both times) and both times meals were done to perfection. They had bottomless coffee, and I’m a breakfast “anytime-of-the-day” type of guy and theirs filled us up and then some. The prices were reasonable and competitive, and the gals were friendly and service was excellent both times and they treated everyone like that.
Besides an excellent restaurant and overnighting area, they had an ice cream shop, beauty salon, movie theater, laundry area, arcade, a chiropractor (but I will say they were not open either time we were there and I didn’t look at their hours.) They also had these awesome massage chairs that were wonderful. It was $5 for 15 minutes and it was the best $15 I spent anywhere.
Petro is easy off and on I-81, I-476, and SR 315 from either 81’s exits 175 and 178. The access road is wide and well marked and easy to get around; truck parking and fueling is separate for RV and car.
All-in-all, our time a Petro was a great experience and we would not hesitate to pull in there again.
