My review is late but we have been traveling for weeks on end from Ga to Ca and staying places for a while if we like them a lot. Bluewater Lake have several campgrounds in the park and not sure why they are listed as separate campgrounds and not just different loops. My review is late but we have been traveling for weeks on end from Ga to Ca and staying places for a while if we like them a lot. Bluewater Lake have several campgrounds in the park and not sure why they are listed as separate campgrounds and not just different loops. Causes some confusion for people reading so I will put this on the most read one but all the camps are in the Bluewater State Park.... Pinon Cliffs, Lakeside, Canyonside and Electric Loop etc In November it gets really cold since you are at around 7500 foot level. We loved it but that cold nights for so long had evenings where temps were down to 14 degrees so we had an electric site and ran an electric heater during the day and our propane furnace at night. BTW...no proplem leveling our site so not sure if they regraded things but we were fine in our pull through site.
There is a propane station in Thoreau about 15 minutes west of Prewitt for refill. Thoreau itself is a depressing little town with tons of poor stray dogs so just go for propane and gas and keep your eyes open. In Grants, there is a Walmart and the best laundromat ever at Capri Laundry on 1st street. Clean and free dryers on Tues and Wed....owner is soooo nice!!!
There is only Electric Loop and Lakeside spots open in the winter but we were the only ones in the entire campground for several days and finally two other rv's showed up. Neat hiking trails but some are on sketchy areas. Go to the dam overlook trail for a nice hike which is fairly safe.
Saw lots of horse poop but no horses until the last couple days and then they stayed by us for hours, grazing in the large meadow across where the pay station is. In November the only active water pump was by space 1 on the road. All others were turned off. Power was good and would have stayed longer but forecast was calling for snow so we left sooner than expected.
Be aware that the entrance gate closes at 5pm so if you leave the campground make sure you are back before 500pm

I frequently travel this corridor but have never stopped here. Very easy access from i40 near grants New Mexico. There are different levels of choice for camping. Eight dollars for primitive, $10 for a camp with a picnic table and fire ring and vault toilets. They also have camps with hook ups for a higher rate.
I am here on November 30. Apparently the front gate closes at 5 PM from November through March. Glad I got here on time. The forecast low tonight is 17°. Apparently it was down to 9° last night. There’s hardly any other campers. The lake is quite low, like all others in our region. But still, a spectacular sunset. There’s also a couple of short trails surrounding the campground.
I am so happy to find another campground in this vicinity.

We stayed for three nights at the end of April. The days were nice and the nights chilly but it was always windy. Some sites were electric with water and dump stations available. The lake was pretty but low. We did see the wild horse on a couple of occasions by the lake. You can actually camp right on the edge of the water. Lots of people were fishing. There is also a boat dock available. We went on a couple of nice hikes (2 miles and 1 mile) down the canyon and to the damn. Cell service was not consistent.

We stopped here for one night on our way through New Mexico and pitched a tent in site 12 of the Lower Electric Loop. There were vault toilets as well as a shower house nearby our site. We stopped here for one night on our way through New Mexico and pitched a tent in site 12 of the Lower Electric Loop. There were vault toilets as well as a shower house nearby our site. We had electric and filled our water jug with potable water next to the vault toilets.
The water in the lake was very low and we didn’t go down to it. We just stayed at our campsite and enjoyed relaxing. It was a bit noisy at night but we were there on a holiday weekend so it was sort of expected. There were a lot of locals dispersed camping nearby as well.
We had Verizon cell service but nothing for AT&T service.
The sites were clean and spacious. We had plenty of room to pitch our tent and park our Jeep. There were a lot of sites even larger than ours that could fit any size RV and we saw quite a few big rigs. We will return with our fifth wheel in the future!
Overall a lovely spot to stop for a night or two. Highly recommended!

Some bathrooms are still closed April 20th but everything is open and the views are great. Water level in the lake is low but you can put a boat in. Not the most level for dry camping but doable.

Being off season and staying here is like having the whole park to yourself! It’s huge. Only one loop with electric and first come first serve. Our rig is 40’ long and can enter several of the electric sites but not all. The rest of the park has many options for big rigs. However the season seems to start April 1st and I assume the closed loops will open. Lots of nice hiking trails with elevations and along the cliffs or in the canyon or around the lake. Walking the entire campground is a nice walk too. This probably gets crowded in the summer and many sites are reservable on reserve America during the peak season. Cell coverage is ok for calls but not much more. Really enjoyed the place with few others here even if we prefer Boondocking. One thing to note, we pulled in going reverse the traffic sign because our door would have need to the road which is odd. So just be aware of that in some of the sites.

I stopped here a year ago, and only realized it when I got here. This time all sites were FCFS... but there was only 1 other RV. First night I picked site 1; it had electrical. Second night I moved up the hill to site C, no electrical; but a nice flat concrete slab and covered picnic table (which didn't matter, it's winter!); I moved... more

Second night I moved up the hill to site C, no electrical; but a nice flat concrete slab and covered picnic table (which didn't matter, it's winter!); I moved because I wanted a view and can see far off a snow capped mountain. It's very windy at this site. The main bath house at the visitors center is the only one open, but just a short 3 minute walk. Clean, showers warm enough. I did a short hike from here.... at this time of year, there's like NO ONE else here.. yesterday maybe 3 other RV's, tonight, I think only one other. Good Verizon.. ZERO AT&T (I have both)

Pit toilets only and they smelled so bad from just walking by...I can't imagine what being inside would be like. So, three stars for cleanliness. Shower houses were closed for the season.
Great area to walk around, a really beautiful hike along Bluewater Creek. The map provided didn't really have any good detail about the trails.
Bluewater Lake seems to be disappearing.

Beautiful park. There is water available at filling stations and some sites have 30amp connections but not water at the sites. A little sketchy coming in but the park is very nice. Site was $14 but we paid $4 if you have an Americal The Beautiful national parks pass.
