I was skeptical about a parking lot style camping spot but it turned out to be a very quiet spot. It is an older gift shop area but it is literally at the gate to the south side of the Petrified Forest NP. The lot has two area adjacent to each other. The first spots have concrete pads with picnic tables and a couple of covered patio tables. They also have non working electrical boxes and are spaced kind of close together. There are four on the perimeter that are a little more private. If you look to the south end of the lot, you will see a larger dirt lot that is next to a storage box and this is the better spot to camp for the evening especially for a loner rig . Heidi, in the gift shop, is a sweetheart and very helpful. There is no water or dump and you cannot get water at the Maverick station in Holbrook which was reported in other reviews. I did not check with the KOA in Holbrook but the staff at Mavericks recommended trying there.so call them and see if they will sell water.
The sign on the gift shop states three day maximum but it is actually a three night maximum.
The gift shop opens early 630 am and closes at 400 pm. Their sister store across the street opens later but stays open until 630pm and sells drinks and beer also.
Great Mexican food at Romos in Holbrook with good Margaritas and beers.

Grateful that they offer this spot for free camping right outside of the entrance of the park. I felt very safe here.

It is located just outside the lower entrance gate for Petrified Forest NP. It was quiet at night. Everyone we met was friendly and knowledgeable about the rocks and shared tips about the park. Dog friendly as well. There are no hookups (old out of use boxes are visible) or facilities for use after the shop closes. Free for 3 nights.

Great Boondocking location, there are a few electric sites. Was totally full by 7pm. Decent cell service early but once the lot filled up speeds dropped to <1mb on T-Mobile and Verizon

Spots closer to the road were level. Easy in and out. Gift shops had all sorts of unique items. So nice to be close to the National Park!

We arrived at NP closing time with half a dozen other rigs. Plenty of space for dry camping. Rained overnight - the only exit from the back lot was a pretty mucky mess after other vehicles ran through. Parking was FREE!
Only complaint - RVs running generators all night. Why?

Location was great as you are right outside the south entrance to the Petrified Forest NP which is exactly why we were here. We found a spot with a picnic table right up front but they had a whole other back lot with open space to park in. At first we thought it was completely blocked off since there was petrified wood stumps blocking the entry to it but then later realized there was an entrance all the way in the back by the fence that you could squeeze through. Overall great experience. We took the advice of other reviews and did not run our generator especially with our neighbors being so close but if that's an issue you can pay for electricity hook up across the street at the other campground. Can't beat FREE though and there was a dumpster near the side of the gift shop you can use. Make sure to stop in at the gift shop to see the nice ladies who work there and get some goodies! Only complaint was the cell service. We have Tmobile. It was very hit and miss [3G/ 4G - 1 bar] or non existence at times.

Found this campsite on Campendium, several reviews of people who stayed with no problem. We drove up. Billboard right next to the camping spot literally says “RV parking, Free camping.” So we pull in and start scoping it to see where to camp. Some lady walks out yelling at us (not kind AT ALL) tells us to get out of here, this is private property, we can’t camp here. We apologize and leave (didn’t even point out that a big billboard fifty yards away disagrees with her), and she flips us the bird as we’re leaving. Granted, it’s after 9 pm, but it’s basically a parking lot — we didn’t figure it would be an issue. So now we’re trying to find somewhere sleep for the night. Hopefully when we go to the gift shop tomorrow we can find someone to ask about it because they either need to deal with this person or update their billboard.
