I stayed 2 nights and even with 40% Deet I couldn’t escape the bugs. And I was 100 yards or so from the water. Nice dirt roads all around to walk the dogs for miles.

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked near the vault toilet close to the lake (no site numbers) in a back-in site. This campground is FCFS and is free. The rating is more a reflection of the lack of any amenities. The road in was dirt but was pretty smooth. Inside the CG the roads and sites were gravel. I got water and dumped tanks at a municipal park on my route here (also free, didn’t note the location - sorry!) Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. This is primarily a park where people come to fish. There is a boat ramp to put boats in the water. It was very quiet in the park and pretty empty early in the week but was 2/3 full by Thursday (right before Memorial Day.) Lovely views of the mountains across the lake. There were swarms of little bugs even though it was cold (got 7” of snow one night… and it was pretty much gone the next day) Come with the groceries you need as it is a 30 minute drive back to Buena Vista. I would stay here again.

As far as I can tell, campground is free: no pay stations or any indication of fees. Pit toilets open and well stocked with toilet paper. Totally flat with no trees but expansive views of low hills nearby and high peaks in the distance.

Site are quite level and long. We had no trouble parking and leveling our 35' motorhome without blocks. Tilt was about 0.5" to one side, 0" front to back.
Still had room for the tow.
Pit toilets are well maintained. Campground has trash bins.
No trees or obstructions whatsoever - great for Starlink and solar panels!
This area is known for high winds, primarily from the South/Southwest. You may want to park your RV with the fridge on the lee side. We had to turn it around because the winds were disabling the propane fridge. Same with the water heater.
Easy access via gravel road, but the washboard is horrendous in some places.

This free campground is a great way to cool off in the summer. It's elevation and constant breeze.are great for August and early September.
The campground has vault toilets, picnic tables and even shelters at some sites. The area is flat so there is no stopping the wind off the lake.
The area can accommodate any size rig and the road is in good repair.
The lake has Rainbow trout and many birds to view such as pelicans and seagulls.
Verizon coverage between 1 and 4 bars of 4G depending on how the wind blows.
