Overview of Indiana Dunes State Park Campground
For Indiana Dunes, the in-state vehicle entrance fee is $7 and out-of-state is $12 per vehicle. For pedestrians, bicycles, buses and passenger vans, the entrance fee is $2 per person. When staying overnight, you will be required to pay the entrance fee the first time you enter and your receipt will serve as your in/out pass the remainder of your stay. In-state annual entrance permits (AEPs) are $50. Out-of-state annual entrance permits are $70. Golden Hoosier permits are $25.

An outstanding campground all the way around! Sites were concrete and extremely level. Plenty of space to spread out with a nice firepit and picnic table. Electric sites only bud washrooms easily accessible from everywhere in the campground. Washrooms and showers were nice and large. And trails leading to the dunes right from the camping areas! Can’t wait to go back next spring!

If you are not a local, this CG offers some surrounds which may be new for you. The hikes to the beach and dunes are memorable - interesting terra and flora. The lake seems more like a sea! No swimming on day here, 9/7/22. Likely due to forceful tides and undertow. Perfect weather here in early September.

This park is very popular so expect it to be at capacity. The sites have nice level concrete pads as well as an additional paved parking area. This sites are good sized and spaced apart fairly well. They do tack on a $12 fee for getting into the park in addition to the camping fee. All the sites have electric only that I saw. There are many trails to the dunes available right at the campground. It’s a pretty long walk/hike to the beach but a short drive.

This is the best place to camp for access to the Indiana Dunes trails and beaches. The sites have concrete pads for the campers and additional paved area for any vehicles. This is the best place to camp for access to the Indiana Dunes trails and beaches. The sites have concrete pads for the campers and additional paved area for any vehicles. They are pretty well spread out. The main restroom building was kept clean. They do charge an additional $12 entry fee on top of your camping fee. The sites have electricity. The campground was nearly full so expect lots of kids running around. It was plenty quiet at night.

This campground is bustling with families and is full-up every night during the summer. Sites are closer than you may be used to for many state parks, but they aren't uncomfortably close. This campground is bustling with families and is full-up every night during the summer. Sites are closer than you may be used to for many state parks, but they aren't uncomfortably close. Lots of tree cover and around a 1/2mile walk to the beach. Lots of sandy trails connect to the campground.
Site 92 was tucked in the back of the campground and abutted a treelined park road. 30/50A electric, with threaded water-fill stations available on your way into or out of the park. Dump station available outside the campground guard station, but after the State Park guard station.
While we had 2-4 bars of Verizon 5G or LTE service here, the towers were incredibly overloaded and the data service was unusable except early in the morning. Starlink was difficult due to tree cover. AT&T was unusable.
We had to leave early due to work constraints requiring data service, but this park is very nice for a vacation!

We’ve always had great experiences staying at state parks. They are well-maintained and managed by happy employees. Indiana Dunes State Park is no exception.
The park features lots of greenery. The restrooms were cleaned regularly, although by the end of the day they were a little rough after so many sandy visitors. The employees were out daily maintaining the grounds. As an aside, remember to secure your trash before going to bed! Raccoons frequent the park.
We never had to unhook our truck during the five days. We were able to bike everywhere, including into town. The people working at the Pavilion were super friendly! We enjoyed having a drink at the rooftop bar overlooking Lake Michigan. Be sure to hike the 3-dunes challenge and visit the nature center!
This is a great park. We will be back.

Beaches in the park get busy but there's plenty of parking. Small towns nearby have eateries and services.

We loved the location of this state park on the shore of Lake Michigan with easy access to Chicago for a day of sightseeing. The scenery around the park is very nice. We loved the location of this state park on the shore of Lake Michigan with easy access to Chicago for a day of sightseeing. The scenery around the park is very nice. We enjoyed walking from the campground to the lake.
The Dune Park station of the South Shore Line is adjacent to the state park. We walked on a nice trail from the campground to the station and rode the train (1.5 hours) to Millennium Park for a day of sightseeing. The return (eastbound) trip is free on the train.
Park roads connect the state park to the adjacent national park.
Most of the campsites are spacious with good spacing between. Our site (8) had very little space around the pad due to undergrowth surrounding the site.

Overall Rating
Well maintained state park with lots of good hiking options right from the campground. Bathrooms and showers were ok. There is a $12 dollar vehicle fee coming in, maybe that was just because we were towing. And all the campsites have 50 and 30AMP power, fill and dump at the station.

We arrived on a Sunday (FYI Sunday and Summer Holidays check in/out is apparently 5pm vs. 2pm Mon-Sat) with a reservation through Friday. We only meant to spend five nights at this park, but ended up staying 14! We set up alerts to through the website to pick up our extra nights as other cancelled. We loved everything about this place- trails, beaches, and playgrounds all accessible from the campground. It's also right near the National Park Visitor Center.
Both sites we stayed at were level and paved with paved parking for our tow vehicle. Sites are Electric only, but offer 50/30/15 Amp. There are two water filling stations in the park near the entrance, which were easy to access, and many smaller water fountain/bottle filling stations through out the park. I do wish there was more access to water in the campground. We have a 60 gal fresh tank and were able to stretch it by collecting water in our gallon jug for drinking and using the bathroom and shower facilities. There are two bathhouses and two vaulted toilets within the campground. Bathrooms and showers were very clean and showers actually got hot with some good pressure. They even had a family restroom with a shower making family shower night super easy.
The campground has a small shop with the essentials and all the staff were super friendly. The camp host was out cleaning up around the grounds daily and had a fire going every night. There is also a nature center near by with activities and during our stay they had a kid campfire with s'mores, stories, and folk music. The 3 Dune Challenge is a great hike and accessible right from the campground. There is also an easier trail that leads to the Pavilion and beach.
Overall very happy with our stay at Indiana Dunes State Park and would stay again.
