It says it's free, but then it says permit required. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Flyswadder asked on 5/29/2023
Where's the potable water in the rec area. Lots of folks say they have it, none say where.

We pulled in just before sunset and headed out the next morning. We wanted to stay another night, but it was the beginning of our trip and we’re excited also to get going! Perfect rest stop.

Camped overnight for our first time boondocking in our 2021 Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108DS. Arrived on Sunday with 2/3 fresh tank, empty grey and black, and a great site overlooking the lake. Weather was terrific, high 60s in the early afternoon. But as the day wore on, the winds picked up and by 6pm, it was a steady 20-30mph from the south. We just stayed snug and warm as the temps dropped (a little) and watched Youtube. Verizon 4G was great, getting 20mb downloads on Speedtest. Bring what you need 'cause the nearest stores are probably 13-15 miles away at Echo Point to the north or Boulder Beach to the south. There were dozens (if not more) of campers in every direction, but we never felt crowded and it was VERY quiet (except for the wind). This is maybe an hour and 15 minutes from or home in Las Vegas and we really enjoyed it!

I spent a month here camping in a tent Dec 2021 to Jam 2022. Wonderful place to spend a few nights or a month. I did pay for a week pass after a couple weeks but was able to stay longer then 15 days without any issues.
Pros: Very convenient if you want to spend some time in Vegas on the cheap. Very spread out, if you want isolation this is your spot. You wont hear other campers if you desire that. You can avoid fees by coming in later. The drive in and out is majestic. The toilets are a big plus for a tent camper like me. Cell phone coverage is great.
Cons: Lots of coyotes, they won't mess with you but don't leave food or small dogs out. The lake is quite low, so a lot of the spots you can't see the lake. The road is rough and there are soft spots, do not arrive at night. Wind can be strong at times, secure your tent and belongings well.

We had a beautiful view. And heard all the coyotes during the night (which we like).
Would like to spend more time here, but moving on.
Things to know:
You need the America the Beautiful park pass. Or be ready to pay a fee to get into this area.
From the guard station you have another 6 mile drive on paved roads.
Once you turn into the area, follow the BEACH ACCESS signs and you are now on gravel bumpy roads. Saw every kind of rig and vehicle in there. There are some sandy areas, so just scout it out.
The town below has everything to offer. If you are a Planet Fitness member, there is one in town.
Great cell coverage.

There's so many spots. You'll definitely fine one. Big rig friendly. Use satellite map to look at the roads and find spots

We stayed here for 15 nights. Great Boondocking sights. You pull in and find a place to set up at. Scout out first so you don’t get stuck or on a dead end road and have to back out. 4 wheel drive is needed for some sights but there are plenty of places a 2 wheel drive can go. All sights are gravel and the road is rough at times.

Lots of big spaces for big rigs or groups to be close together.
Get a cheap UV light and hunt scorpions at night. The kids had a blast!
