Overview of Apgar Campground
Apgar Campground will require a reservation during the peak season. Once the reservation period ends, they will revert back to first come, first served.
25 sites can accommodate up to a 40-foot RV or truck and trailer combination.
Grizzly and black bears frequent the area; food storage regulations strictly enforced; when not in immediate use, all food, beverages, coolers, cooking utensils, pet food, or other attractants must be kept in a closed, hard-sided vehicle or secured in bear-proof storage lockers near campground restrooms.

Can’t see it, but can hear it. Fine as long as they aren’t doing road work…they were in mid-September, so you could hear the trucks, even at night.

We came when they were changing over to Primitive camping, meaning no water and dump. Had only one loop open (Loop B) and only one bathroom, pit toilet. We came when they were changing over to Primitive camping, meaning no water and dump. Had only one loop open (Loop B) and only one bathroom, pit toilet. Unfortunately that meant a line sometimes to use the bathroom.
When we arrived they were shutting things down and we asked the ranger the timing and he found the info we needed. The dump was closed down that day and in two days the water was shut off. Some people were unaware of the water and dump being shutdown and we’re not happy. Recreation.gov never mentioned it.
The sites are a mixed bag and you only hope you pick the right spot for your rig. Sites range from short, narrow, flat, not flat, in ravines to wide and flat. We ended up in one that had a tight turn radius for our size rig and was narrow. When you stepped out of the door you were on a downslope, but otherwise a nice site.
If you camp near the Going to the Sun road, I imagine it is very noisy. We were about mid-way and at night sitting by the campfire was noisy. I suspect because of construction, because some of the vehicles sounded like large trucks.

Stayed here for five nights mid September. Site 90 is very large and has a level pad for your camper. It’s on the edge of the loop so less neighbors. That also means you are closer to the highway and get some road noise, but regular traffic is low. They were doing road construction at night so there was unusually frequent night road noise from the big rigs going to and from the road construction. It’s a Fall issue. Sun does not peak over the mountain to the east until around noon. Solar charging of batteries is a challenge between that and the trees. We ran our generator about 30 minutes in the morning and evenings to keep them topped off. Restrooms are clean. They have free showers, but we did not use them. There is a dump station with black tank rinse and fresh water fill. T-Mobile cell coverage was mostly 2 bars of 5g, but would get spotty and dump down to 1 bar LTE. Best coverage at night and mornings.

This campground is located in Glacier National Park. Reservations are made through recreation.gov and they opened up 6 months in advance. The sites are reserved quickly once released. There is a a 14 day maximum stay (at least during their summer season). FYI: At the time of this review reservations in Apgar Campground get you access to the Going to the Sun road daily during your stay. If you want to explore the other areas of the park (Many Glacier, Saint Mary, North Fork) you need a separate daily vehicle reservation. Some of those reservations are released months in advance. They also release a number of reservations at 0800 Mountain Time the day prior.
This campground has paved roads, but gravel sites. There is dry camping only. Generators are allowed during limited hours: 8:00am-10:00am; 12:00pm- 2:00pm and 5:00pm-7:00pm. Campground has a dump station (with one dump only) and potable water near loop A. The dump is more convenient to use on the way in versus the way out. Water spigots are located through the campground, but these are not threaded. The sites are all pull throughs. Some are just parallel to the road. Other sites are slightly off the road with greenery, trees, and sometimes rocks between the road and the site. Sites vary widely with the amount of trees, their placement and how level they are. Some sites are not level at all. It appeared that all campsites had a fire ring and picnic table. Gathering of firewood is prohibited in the campground. Witnessed the park rangers enforce this rule with our neighbors. Apgar village was the closest place to purchase firewood. There were shared food storage boxes located at different areas within each loop.
Campground has restrooms with flush toilets located throughout. Some are definitely dated and others have been remodeled. The sinks had cold water only and zero soap for hand washing. Free showers are also located in the campground.
Bear proof trash cans and recycling bins also in each loop. There was a recycling bin for propane bottles near the entrance of the campground.
Upon arrival you go directly to your site. A host will come by and check you in and go over current restrictions. Site A59 was pretty level from side to side. We did need to go up on blocks in the front. The site itself was pretty big and even had a tent pad. The picnic table at the site was missing a bolt on one of the benches, I didn’t trust it. It was also pretty weathered with the paint peeling. From this site is was less than a tenth of mile walk to Lake McDonald.
Had 1 bar LTE for Verizon. On occasion a text would go through, but that was about it for data. Able to make a phone call sometimes. The Apgar visitor center (about a half mile away) had wifi. During the day it was often unusable. Found it to be adequate in the morning before 8:00 and after 7:00 PM. In order to use the wifi you need to log in with an email and it’s limited to 30 minutes a day. In addition, the Verizon data was just as poor in West Yellowstone.

We were able to piece together a week stay with only 1 move in late May/early June. We were most nervous about getting parked in this CG after reading reviews, but we were able to make it work in both of our sites (D170 and D162) with our 32 Dr fifth wheel. Almost exclusively pull through sites, a handful were fairly sloped and would have made parking very challenging, but not ours luckily.
Dump station on your left as you come into campground, only one spot that can get a little busy as campers are checking out in the mornings. Free showers in loop A (we didn’t use but heard they were good). Sites are fairly spread out, but things do start to feel a little busy if the CG is full- the only days of that were Fri/Sat for our stay…
Bike trail leaves right from camp and dogs are allowed so very nice for pet owners. Lake is about a 5 min walk from D loop where the dogs can swim… no good cell service, visitor center (10 min walk) has free Wi-Fi.

We were here years ago and paid another visit this week. We stayed in C loop which consists of all pull throughs however, if you have anything over 25' or so, you'll likely have to back in. We were here years ago and paid another visit this week. We stayed in C loop which consists of all pull throughs however, if you have anything over 25' or so, you'll likely have to back in. The pull throughs are tight and trees are in the way. A Loop is mostly pull-off sites and B Loop is mostly pull through but looked to be more level and wider. With our 30', I'd plan for B loop next time.
During the high season, Apgar is now a reservation only campground. This made it less stressful than driving around looking for a FCFS spot however because some people don't cancel when plans change, there were a lot of empty spots. Just an FYI, we left a day early and were able to go on to recreation.gov, even after we had checked in, and we were fully refunded for our last day that I cancelled.
I love this campground because it's within easy walking distance of Lake McDonald, the Apgar Village and Visitor center.
Clean bathrooms with flush toilets. People were respectful of generator hours. If you have a campground reservation, take a screenshot of it because you'll need to to get back into the park between 6AM-4PM. You do not need a separate GTSR pass if you have camping reservations.
We had no ATT or Verizon. We even tried the WeBoost and Mimo. However, T-Mobile had voice and text service with no boost and crazy 30-45 Mbps down and 2-3 Mbps up with the WeBoost.

Where it really shines is as a base camp for the Lake MacDonald area and western half of Going to the Sun Road. GTSR wasn't yet opened past Avalanche Creek campground, but a 2-mile hike from the latter yielded us a beautiful alpine lake with a majestic backdrop:)

Got there @1PM mid week. Only one spot left but a stump was in the way of our rig. The camp host made that spot the Admin site for the night and gave us A1. Each night the host juggled the admin site letting us stay there for 4 nights. Great hosts. Different hosts might have responded differently. Solar a challenge under the trees.

Heads up-
You cannot go in to see if there are any campsites available between 6 am and 5 pm, you have to have the entry to the sun ticket!
We went in and they exited us out at 7 am because we did not have one and we only did this because on another app they had wrote a review that one was not needed to get a campsite, not true.

Avoid Glacier! Instituted ticketed entry $2, which is impossible to get inline, plus you can’t access fcfs cg without entry ticket unless you take a chance & come back at 5pm & try to find availability. National Park Service is insane... don’t know how to run an operation. Lines backed up with angry folks like me trying to get entry... field operation with10 ranger staff set up to handle angry visitors that don’t understand confusing new rules.AVOID!
