We love this park and the campgrounds are mostly top-notch. We did stay in the “A” campground once and found the campsites to be small, significantly off level, and too near neighboring sites for our tastes. The “B” campground however, offers level concrete pads, full hookups, much shade, and ample space between neighboring sites. There are 2 shower houses with flush toilets in the B Campground and both were clean and well stocked during our stays at the park. As others have said, don’t count on any usable cell coverage with any service provider, and if you rely on StarLink, choose your site wisely as the heavy tree cover will prevent connection in all but a few campsites. I do find the online reservation service used by Arkansas to be clumsy, outdated, and limited in functionality. For instance, you make your reservation and pay online but it takes several days to receive an email confirmation with your reservation number. I’d recommend taking a screen shot, or do a ‘Print Screen’ as soon as you pay in case you never receive the email confirmation … which has happened to me more than once with this service. Also, you cannot make changes or cancellations to your reservations online; you have to call or mail the park and ask the rangers to do that for you. Anyway, this park receives top marks from us for the facilities (B Campground), upkeep and natural beauty, but the State’s camping reservation service is several notches below current industry standards.

The access road in is narrow with no shoulder. The site we ended up in was about 4 degrees off front to back but level side to side. 4 degrees is 30 inches for us.
Only a quick overnight.

We love this park. Loop B has sewer and lots of green space. Sites are a good distance apart. Trash receptacles are shut tight and conveniently placed right next to the bath houses. Hiking trails are hilly but fun. Only downside? was no cell or internet service. We checked emails and used our phones at the visitors center.

The grass was very nicely mowed, and deer grazed in our front yard. The State Park has its own 27-hole golf course that is cut through the hills and woods, its excellent and not too expensive. We were able to get satellite access on site 65, most sites have too many trees. The park has all the normal amenities of a State Park, visitor center, ranger talks, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, tennis, etc.

Camped in A area with about 10 of the sites occupied on a Thursday night. Quiet except for the older couple next door playing some weird, godawful music for hours. Showers were user-friendly and had hot water. Kudos, Arkansas; USACOE needs to take notes. Most sites in this loop were very close together and suitable only for short rigs. The exceptions were sites 24 and 25, which back up to a small creek at the base of a steep hill. A trail leads from 24 and connects to some of the park’s 33 miles of trails. The Old Military Road trail starts at the Lake Austell boat ramp parking lot and includes a section of the Trail of Tears. The lower loop is very winding and hilly and would be muddy when wet. The upper loop gets you to the Trail of Tears section quicker and is wide and flat after the challenging set of steps up from the dam. Lots of big trees and shade on the trail and in the campground.

PROS
Senior discount
No fee assessed to make on-line reservations
Quiet
Slight view of lake from Site 57
Site 57 has no site next to it or behind it
Good distance between campsites
Dark sky friendly except for sites near toilet/shower facilities where there is an actual street light
Climate controlled toilet/shower facility in campground B
Both campground B toilet/shower facilities very clean with ample supply of TP, soap and paper towels
Wood picnic table (on concrete pad), pedestal BBQ grill, metal fire ring with cooking grate and metal lantern hook
Wide roadway in campground B
Small playground
Access to lake swimming area from campground B
Trash receptacles at toilet/shower facility
Lots of deer
Smaller Walmart in Wynne
Pops Grill in Wynne
CONS
County burn ban in place upon arrival but no signage anywhere alerting of ban. We saw the Arkansas burn ban website and inquired upon checkin if it was enforced and park clerk affirmed ban but we saw many campers had a wood fire burning all the time. So without any signage we understand the confusion and noncompliance. Park should at least place burn ban signage at campground entrance.
Site 57 unlevel side-to-side
No cell service. No public phone in park. Parks signage states WiFi at park visitor center could be used to make phone calls. We found this not true with our T-MOBILE service as we purposely went to the visitor center to make a WIFI call. There is WIFI at visitors center but only one bar and too weak to transmit a call. So if there is an emergency after visitor center is closed and you need to make a call, good luck, as there is no public phone nor any camp hosts. We drove approximately 8 miles towards Wynne to get sufficient cell signal to make calls and connect with internet.
Only free WiFi is at park visitor center. We purchased WiFi from park vendor Viasat $20 unlimited for 3 days for one device. Viasat delivered a good signal within 200 ft of toilet/shower facility so it was useless in our campsite #57. Don’t waste your money!
Sewer connection at rear of site pad so bring the looooong stinky slinky!
Pets not kept on leash
No security gate closure overnight

We stopped here for two nights on our way south. We were in Camping Area A, Site 35. The sites here have a long narrow concrete pad to back into. They had recently had heavy rain and the site and parts of the site were pretty muddy. Cell service is spotty at best. We had to go into the town of Wynne to McDonalds to get internet access. This is about a five mile drive.
Other reviews have cited the winding road to get to the camp and the drive down to the office and campsites. Yes there is a winding road, but in my opinion, it was not a barrier to reach a really nice park. Not all the sharp curves are marked, so be aware driving in.
The camp has a number of good hiking trails. The Austell trail has some areas where there are steep drop-offs. Without railings. It is not dangerous as the trail itself is well marked and sufficiently wide to pass through.
The shower house could have been cleaner. But it was not so bad that it rated unclean.
If we are in the area again, we definitely stay again.
