I can't give fair stars or a proper review, just trying to shout out to all y'all travelers that this area might be closed for a while. I drove up to the only road that leads to this camping area. I drove up to the only road that leads to this camping area. Two large signs stating "Bonito Lake and all surrounding area in city is closed." I'm not sure why or for how long. This was 3/28/2021 for me. In case anyone plans on traveling here anytime soon, here's a heads up! (And if/when it is open, hope someone posts a review to share the great news :D)

Expansive dispersed camping area with no cell signal in the main camping area. It's about 4.5miles from the highway to the lake and another 4.5miles further to Argentina trailhead (via rd107). The trailhead has a well, 2 vault toilets, and horse corals, and there are a couple other picnic areas with vault toilets along the road as well. The last 1-2 miles to the trailhead has dozens of dispersed camping spots that will often have 100+ people on a weekend, but people are still well spread out along both sides of the creek. All sizes of rigs can access. If you venture up rd108 or some of the other side canyons you can find cell signal and many more secluded campsites. The lake itself is empty with a 2021 completion date and the developed campgrounds around it are closed. Tons of great hiking, creeks, and wildlife (wild horses, elk, etc). The only downside is some parts of the forest haven't recovered from the fire.

This is a cool spot for an overnight camp that is easy to access with a truck and trailer. 14 miles west of Bonito Lake with a nice little stream for a view. The dispersed camping was plentiful. Looks like the reclamation of Bonito Lake should be complete in 2020.
Overall a nice area

Me and my pup stayed overnight during this month of December. We didn’t have any snow, but it was pretty cold, and extremely windy! There’s a little creek nearby for non-potable washing, and there’s ample firewood available and some established fire pits. I arrived at the campsite fairly late, and by the time I stared cooking our meal it was dark out (about 7pm). The smell of my cooking brought coyotes down from the hills, and they started crying and cackling. Please camp with the necessary safety equipment! I used a little (but loud) compressed air blow horn and that made the coyotes retreat, and have many canisters of mace. We were sure to store all food items far away from our campsite, and I kept a big fire going all night to deter any hungry creatures.
We didn’t get the opportunity to check it out, but this campsite is really close to a manmade reservoir with an impressive dam, which may or may not be stocked with fish.
There were a couple of hunting troops dispersed throughout the area. I highly recommend wearing a blaze orange vest, and getting such vests for any pets you may bring.
One more thing: this area is highly susceptible to forest fires (much of the hillside has already been burned). Be sure to check the Nogal fire restrictions, and practice responsible fire maintenance.
