A great escape to the beach in the middle of July. The campgrounds are fantastic! Large and level with the hook ups in a convenient easy to get to place. The restrooms were nice and they tried to keep them clean (I'll get back to that in a minute). A short drive to the beach which we had completely to ourselves, unless you want to count the crabs, seagulls and sea turtles. Some of the best beaches we've been to... soft white sand and miles to walk and beach, beach, beach!!! Now, for the negative and this was pretty huge... The flesh eating mosquitoes!! We couldn't spend anytime outside our camper because of the flesh eating swarms. As I said, the restrooms they tried to keep clean, but just too many mosquitoes eating you alive!! To escape... go to the beach. Wish I could give this 5 stars, perhaps return when the mosquitoes aren't so bad!

I was lucky enough to drive up and get one of the two remaining spots.....soo glad I did! The campsites are lovely (28 is at the end, next to their interpretative center so only has as one camp neighbor) and spacious with full hookups. The comfort centers are well located and clean. The beaches are gorgeous and all the rangers and volunteers I encountered were just lovely. Every. Single. One.
The camp has two hosts and both sites sell firewood ($5/bundle) and ice ($3/bag). The camp host on my side of the camp was an absolute sweetheart of a lady. Stopped by for a chat before I left in the morning. Just a wonderful human.
There’s a great bike ride out to the end of the island, not for a road bike (some loose sand), but anything else would be fine.

St. George Island offers the best of Florida -- practically deserted beaches with blindingly white sands, interesting upland hiking through pines and scrub, plenty of good spots for kayaking and canoeing, great birdwatching, and ready access to fresh delicious seafood.
Our stay in March 2018 was perfect. Bugs were so minimal that we really didn't notice them, nighttime temperatures were cool, and the beach was mostly empty even though the campground was full. The hiking trail that leads from the south end of the campground offers a good upland hiking experience (2.5 miles each way) and we saw lots of birds including a bald eagle. On the marine mammal front, dolphins were plentiful on both the gulf and bay sides of the park.
The campground is well-maintained with very nice and large bathhouses. We appreciated having recycling bins right at the campground entrance near the dump station. The sites are fairly large and well-spaced, but be aware that the campground had a prescribed burn in late 2017 that reduced the shrubbery between sites. We still found the privacy level OK. Do pay attention to site size when making reservations online -- some of the sites are quite small and would only work for tents or vans.
The closest grocery store is the Piggly Wiggly Express (the Blue Pig) located at the gas station at the bottom of the bridge from Eastpoint, about 10 miles from the campground. It should cover most needs, but there's also a full size Piggly Wiggly in Apalachicola. The small communities of Eastpoint, Apalachicola, and St. George Island all have seafood restaurants offering local oysters, and to get truly local stop by the trailer parked across from the lighthouse (Dail's) to purchase super fresh gulf shrimp.

We didn't go to the beach here, no dogs, but down the road there is a beautiful beach where dogs are allowed on leash. Mosquitos are a bit much, the camp ground is on the bay side, over at the beach there where none. We went to Paddy's Raw Bar for oysters, shrimp and beer. The place was perfect with fire pits on the bay and live music on a Monday night. In the morning we went to Apalachicola, cool little old time gulf port town, where we had breakfast at Cafe Con Leche. The camp ground it self was ok, the state park was beautiful and the location was amazing.

The one detractor for our late October stay was the mosquitoes. We had big spray and citronella candles and still could not comfortably be outside our camper for any real period of time (like 5 mins) without getting bit. We had no problem with them on the beach (as expected due to the steady wind), fortunately.
I think we would like this campground later in the winter when there's a lower chance of mosquito swarms. Otherwise, we really enjoyed the spot!

Again, another Florida beach that doesn't allow dogs. There is a beach near the lighthouse that you can have your dog on the beach (On a leash), which may preclude any swimming.
Overall, I think this and any of the other Florida state parks in the pan-handle are excellent if you aren't a dog lover, with a dog, who loves to swim and can smell water a mile away.

St. George Island is a long, narrow barrier island on the panhandle of Florida in the "uncommon Florida" and is part of Franklin County, referred to as "forgotten coast" because it's a far cry from the highly developed towns in other parts of Florida. The state park is located at the very tip of the island. The entrance to the state park is 10 miles (and one bridge) from the nearest town, East Point, and the campground is about another 5 miles into the park.
Campsites are located on the inland side of the island in a pine flat wood forest, have electric and water connections, and okay spacing between them with lots of trees. Primitive camping is also available down a 2.5 mile long trail, or via kayak or canoe. We were there in November, and the mosquitoes were still pretty bad in the forested area, but not as bad on the beaches because of the breeze. The campground has rest rooms and showers, which were very clean. They also have recycling.
There are wonderful trails for hiking and biking, and lots of places to canoe or kayak. The beaches here are quiet and secluded, the only negative is that dogs aren't allowed on the beaches in the state park. Fortunately, dogs are allowed on the beach on St. George Island outside of the park.
St. George Island is very small and quaint, and has several fun bars/restaurants. All serve Florida's best oysters (and they are cheap), from Appalachicola just 12 miles down the road. Eddie Teach's and Harry A's both allow dogs on their patios. There is also a lovely lighthouse, the St. George Light, that was restored by friends of ours.
There are a couple of shops and small markets, but the nearest supermarkets as well as laundry facilities are 15 miles from the campground in Eastpoint, or 20 miles away from the campground in Appalachicola. Appalachicola is another quaint and historic town and worth a visit if you have the time.
Or you can choose to get away from it all and not leave the state park. There is plenty to enjoy there: beautiful beaches, many types of birds, butterflies, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, and we even saw dolphins close to the shore.

We walked deep into the forest, these massive pines surrounding the footsteps we left in the sandy trail as we wondered what the map we'd picked up at the trailhead was for, certainly not the trail we were on. Playing "kick the pinecone" and collecting fallen branches still bearing their needles we swept away our tracks behind us. Some mile or so into it, the promise of a beach ever present, similar to hiking a mountain where you swear you're at the top but with every bend you see another 100 feet to go, so did the beach elude us.
We turned around and headed home, defeated.
A few minutes at our site and our oldest son revealed that there was another secluded beach just 100 yards away, in a different direction. A hop, two skips and a handful of jumps and we'd arrived, at one of the most pristine, natural beaches in Florida. The sun dipped into the Apalachicola Bay, burning orange and silhouetting the pines as we had the entire place to ourselves.
The next morning we rushed to catch the sunrise over the main beach, where dunes and pines once again rose all around, the closest thing to a West Coast beach I've ever experienced.
My Lady couldn't find ten minutes of her day where she didn't tout the amount of paradise we found ourselves living in.
Don't expect WiFi, but you could eat off of the bathroom floors (if you're into that sort of thing). My third grade teacher would give me an A+ for "What I did for my Summer Vacation" if this place was involved, because it'd be impossible to write a bad story about the place.

The campground was quiet with adequate sized sites (30, 31,33 are the best) offering decent separation with lots of trees for shade. The facilities were clean and modern, and they even had recycling which we've found is a rare occurrence in the state of Florida. Aside from the campground, the real reason you come here is for the beach. And what a beach it is! Miles and miles of pristine gleaming white sand that stretches on as far as the eye can see. Combine that with clear, sparkling water and it really doesn't get any better. Needless to say, we can't wait to make a return trip!
