I was able to find a spot pretty easily. I loved my site because it was set far back away from the road. You could still see and hear the cars but I didn’t get all the dust from the speed demons flying through. The trails are great for hiking or bike riding! I will be back soon!

I found this site for a weekend Ren Fair getaway with friends. It's surprisingly difficult to find camping areas close to Larkspur Renaissance festival. After looking at the location and general reviews, this seemed promising. There is definitely a sliding scale in terms of quality sites down this road. This is a great, easily traveled road for free drive-up camping with a plethora of sites. However, it is also a HUGE off-road vehicle playground. Due to this, you have to get in VERY early and try to get a site on the East side of the road....otherwise, you will have dirt bikes and four wheelers roaring past your tents throughout the day. I will say, however, everyone who was partaking of those trails was very considerate of sites near the trail and they would slow down so as not to kick up too much dust. The site we had was right on the trail but the size of the site was HUGE with ample room for several tents and/or trailers. For our purposes it was ideal as we weren't at our site during the day to be bothered by the vehicles and they weren't running at night.
For those picky about needing to have bathroom facilities a few of the sites are near enough to trail heads that have outhouses which are well kept up. Overall, if you enjoy dirt biking or you are looking for an easy free site, close to Ren Fair, I would highly recommend this area.

“Decent National Forest Service Road (550) leads to endless campsites.... some numbered, some just designated with a camping symbol.”

Take 285 to CR 126 at Pine ... then go for a few miles until the sneaky turn off onto 550 which is the road you'll camp on. It's an easy drive in off the paved road... lots of hills and hairpin turns but fit for just about any vehicle type. About 30 or so Numbered sites at great spots along the road... just keep driving and driving until you find one you like. Some with pull off's for larger rigs, others barely a wide shoulder for cars, but great campsites a few yards back. No trash cans or tables... but a decent fire pit with no grilles. Lots of boulders and great hikes all around. Great vistas at the top of each hill. Absolutely quiet where we camped. My only disappointment was that some folks leave a bit of trash behind... which will vary with season. We cleaned up what we found around our site... though someone had dumped out a cat box and left a mess that we buried with the shovel. :)

This is a seemingly endless road, washboard but nothing you couldn't handle even with a large RV or trailer, that winds back forever. We made it to site #32 (even though it's "dispersed", free boondocking, there are still numbered sites) and were maybe 1/3rd of the distance to the end of the road.
No Verizon in our spot or during most of the drive, and scattered AT&T...maybe 1 bar of 3G every now and then and the type of high flying service that can eek out a text message if you give it two or ten tries and sit there watching your phone....
Another one of those, "Not too bad! Except that this is Colorado, and the free camping can be so outstanding that this place just doesn't make the cut."
We're getting very, very spoiled.
Some of the sites have massive boulder stacks that would be very fun to climb on. Some can accommodate even the largest of RVs while others are strictly for tenting given the short, steep parking areas. No fires in the rainstorms we've been having seemed a bit silly, too, it's literally been dumping for weeks and they don't bother to reassess. Thems the breaks though.
