We rented an Escape van, and our spot included hook ups ( which we did not use. We loved walking the grounds. The birds all over Patagonia are just a delight to see. The landscape around the lake, hills, shrubs &!anazing Mexican Bird of Paradise are worth seeing. There were some teenage parties playing loud hip hop during the day, but it was easily overlooked. Do they have to scream when they swim? There was another moron who thought everyone would enjoy their rap music, but it stopped by 10. Sites are close together, but I think it’s very close proximity to lake is worth it. For the price, porta potties are not what I would expect. Watch your feet , lots of Ants, even if you arm’s dropping food. I would return .... really very beautiful area

After visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park, Patagonia was a bit of a let down. The sites up on the northeast loops were offered more privacy and were quieter than the congested beachfront area (we were in site 22)--carefully selected to have some space. Many of the sites are basically on top of each other, or just a pullout of the access road. For how busy the campground was it was pretty quiet in the evening. Arrival was uneventful, but no campground host welcomed us, and in fact, we could not identify any in the campground at all. The campground had scattered litter, and the bathrooms and dump station were closed.
Hiking on the birding trail was interesting up around the swampy end of the lake. This would be a much nicer hike if not for the cattle. Watch were you step. The cattle are very docile, and in fact, will not get out of your way hiking. Evening walks in the campground were pleasant after the day use folks had headed home.
Cell phone was sketchy (Verizon), and data was marginal.

We just got our 2021 GeoPro 20BHS Dec. 2020. I have gone there several times so far and thought I would share some of my notes.
Cell service is unreliable here. I can sometimes get a text through. Once I made a call. If you really need to get in touch, take a walk and watch your phone because there are some pockets of service upon occasion.
If you have little kids I would recommend staying in the West lot over the East lot because the west is flatter with less risk of them falling down the cliff side into the water. If you are without kids or dogs you might enjoy the East lot for its access to the water so you can fish right off your site.
On Sunday morning there is a backup of trailers waiting to access the dump station. The sheriff was there to direct traffic at noon when we pulled up. The park empties out on Sundays. All of the other times that I have accessed the dump station it has been no waiting. Two rigs can pull into the station at once and the bays are long enough to easily accommodate all of the rigs that I have seen pull in. Just watch those back tires as I have seen one long trailer begin to clip onto the curb.
This park has been completely full every time I went there because our AZ State Parks systems allows for reservations online, to anyone in the country for up to a year in advance. You cannot expect to pull up to this park and grab a spot. If you really want to stay here then hover over the website and book in advance. I have only been able to snag a cancellation, here and there, by watching the website like a hawk. Very frustrating to this state resident because landing a spot to take my kids for the weekend or holiday is nearly impossible because it's filled up with snowbirds. The people I have talked to said they book for the two weeks at a time, a year in advance, and rotate around AZ state parks for the winter, which is October- March/April. They are great people to camp around, if you can squeeze in among them for one night, or two if you're really lucky. I can honestly say that my neighbors from Dec-March have been very: helpful, quiet, friendly and enjoyable to talk to. I sometimes take my kids out without my husband and I feel very safe and comfortable camping here amid snowbird season. I have a feeling that when the demographic changes in the warmer months it will be more local tent campers that like to stay up late and enjoy their weekends. So, I won't forget my earplugs! December-Feb had almost zero day-use action. We literally had 2 other families on the beach with us- nice! March saw a full beach and full day-use parking lot. I expect it to stay that way until school is back in session and it gets too cold out to be lured into the water.
They have a Junior Ranger Program that my children really like. It helped me greatly to pick up their packet of puzzles and games, on our way out of the park, because the kids stayed busy working on it through the dump station and drive home.
We took the hike at the east end of the park, in March, and it was very scenic. Unfortunately, there are many cows and their "scat" around so you really have to stay on vigilant. Signs are posted that mountain lion have been seen in the park. It's calving season so I kept my kids close because the lions could be hiding in the reeds or thick vegetation that is all over the trail. The trail was crowed with walkers but it wasn't an issue. The biggest issue was a territorial bull that really was angry with people on his turf. He growled, if you could call it that, at other hikers for a long time and when we started to leave the water he came down the other side of the creek into our location and started rubbing his head all over the small cliff on the bank. I was scared and so were the kids. My kids loved the slow moving and shallow creek. I enjoyed the shady walk with lots of birds to observe. I really, really love watching the birds and waterfowl that call this oasis in the desert their home. On that note, the red wing black birds can be very loud in the morning if they hang out in a mesquite above your RV, which happened to us 1:4 times we have camped.
On your way to Patagonia Lake State Park, be sure to stop at the Corner Scoop in Sonoita and the Stake Out restaurant. Fun and delicious!
Overall, Patagonia Lake State Park is an oasis in the desert worth visiting but, be prepared to be prepared. I'm going to see how deep into the warmer months we can get before we will be chased off by the higher temps. Maybe I will write a warm season review next! Safe and fun travels, all.

The Park is located in a really beautiful area of southern AZ. Rolling desert landscape surrounds the Park. The lake is beautiful and clearly the main attraction of the Park – fishing, boating and swimming paradise. Overall, very clean and well maintained. Paved roads and asphalt sites. Our site was spot-on level, however overlooked the main parking lot access to the swim beach, and thus had a lot of drive through traffic. The campground layout seems a bit weird with sites at random patterns and angles. Some sites are randomly placed in areas that I would not think to support an RV campsite. The manner in which this park is laid out is the reason for the lower overall rating- not the best of AZ State Parks. When making your reservation, larger rigs should pay particular attention to site specifics, as we have seen some huge rigs in sites clearly designed for smaller setups. Some mesquite trees offer overhead obstacles. The roads are kind of tight in areas and backing in may be a challenge to navigate. The numbered sites 103-108 – I would not call these campsites at all, they are just asphalt parking spots. Choose your site wisely. Only two bathhouses within the park. With over 100 W/E only campsites this ratio is basically insufficient to support the number of campers unless there is FHU. Park was completely full on the weekend, even during winter. Additionally, during winter the visitor’s center was closed. The Lakeside Market was open and offered only very basic supplies and a lot of junk food. Come fully stocked with whatever provisions you require, as it is a long way to travel to resupply. Verizon- 2 Bars. No OTA reception. Dump station was centrally located, clean and easy to maneuver.

This state park is set on the Patagonia Lake Reservoir and we loved the setting for its proximity to the lake. The sites are closer together some of the other state parks but we were comfortable with the distance between sites. The park does offer free wifi but we found we had to sit on the patio of the gift shop for access and bandwidth was spotty. Honestly, we enjoyed sitting on the patio because of the lake view and the warm sun. As for T-Mobile cell coverage, we found we could get 1-bar at certain places around the park but in general to make a voice call we had to drive to the top of the hill above the park.
There is a short birding trail along the lake but there are no other trails unless you head up to Sonoita Creek Natural Area. The real attraction is the lake for its boating, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing. The park is crazy busy on weekends but we found midweek to be quiet and peaceful.
We also enjoyed driving into the town of Patagonia. Ovens of Patagonia is a great bakery, Gathering Grounds is a nice coffee shop and the Wagon Wheel Saloon serves tasty lunches. All have outdoor seating, of course.
