We just stayed one night on our way somewhere the site they gave us was 6 inches off level at the flattest spot. Closest restroom was closed and it just wasn’t that up kept of a place. However, if you’re looking for the location, just go in with the expectations of parking and not spending time at your site.

This is probably the best city park we've stayed at, particularly compared to the horrible Gosnold's Hope down the road. There are lots of trails that start off in the park.
The office is open until 9PM and same day reservations are available if you call them. Online reservations are also available. There was plenty of availability in October.
The access road is in good shape and there aren't any issues with branches. Our site was reasonably level. No issues with water or power. All sites are heavily shaded.
There was a high amount of road noise.

Stopped for the night while passing through. Wooded spots, paved camper pads, quiet. Bath houses were fine-nothing special but did the job. Office staff friendly. Would stop again if passing through.

This park is a great bargain, but be careful which site you reserve. I called so I could make sure we got a site that was long enough based on a list given to us by friends who have stayed here. I chose #51, and am not sure online reservation was even an option at the time. Online it says #B51 has a "slight" downhill. It was actually 3.8% while connected to the truck. With Big Foot levelers and 7.5" blocking we were still 0.5% off level. Good enough, but be aware. All three axles were off the ground, and the asphalt was soft enough that we sunk in at the rear. The nose was at the ground. It was on a curve, so backing in between the trees was easy enough, they were placed far enough back. Water and electric posts were convenient for our rig, in the middle right where our hookups are located. Waterfront in the description means you're closest to the water, but it's barely visible and you walk through the woods to get to the swampy edge. Sites are fairly close together, there was train noise and freeway noise, but not bothersome inside. Bathrooms were dated and as clean as you can expect, but we ran out of warm water the first time. Recommend turning the water off between soaping and rinsing, much better results that way. Wouldn't recommend other loops besides B for a rig our size, 45' fifth wheel pulled with a Freightliner HDT, 68' total. We would come back if we needed to stay in the area again, but we would choose a different site. NN Park has a senior rate, but sure to ask for it!

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked in the site #B48, an E/W, BI site for $36/night. Roads and sites were asphalt, but both were in sad shape with cracks and crumbling edges everywhere. I had to thread a needle to get into this site between the trees, the water spigot, and significant erosion on the opposite side of the pavement with a big drop off. The site was totally covered in leaves so I had to dig it out before parking so I could find the edges of the asphalt. I took some close up photos that show the crumbling asphalt. The site also sloped significantly. I had to put three boards under one side to try to get level. Most sites in the park are sloped in some manner. I don’t think they have a camp host here. It would be helpful to have one armed with a leaf blower… Bathhouse was older and showed it. Showers are individual rooms and there is rust on the bottom of the panels. The laundry room had several machines out of order ($1.75 each W/D.) I had 2 bars 5G with Verizon, 30.2 mbps download, no wifi in the campground, didn’t check OTA channels. It is a lovely setting by the lake, but there is a ton of road noise and early morning trains. I would recommend sites on the B loop for larger rigs – 46, 48, 53, 54, 57 and A5, A11, and D101 on the other loops. B51 was ok, but sloped down toward the lake. Take the road into the dump station slow, it was very bumpy. There is easy access to Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown from the CG. I wish it was in better shape. I enjoyed my time there after the initial issues getting settled into my spot.

Very welcoming staff. Park is very big with lots of campsite lots. A lot of the lots are not very level, so bring leveling blocks. Overall, it was a nice experience.

Check in was smooth, they let us change sites after an issue with the one we booked. Great amenities and relatively clean. We stayed for a few days and enjoyed the archery range, bike paths, and Colonial Williamsburg. This is our second time here. You can’t beat the price for the proximity.

You have to call to make a reservation and when you do I definitely recommend asking for level spots only. Some sites are really unlevel but the staff are usually pretty good about steering you towards a level site. The park itself offers over 5 miles of trails that you can access from the campground. A beautiful break from the hustle of Newport News!

I was very happy with the store, especially the nice laundry facilities.
I was amazed at the heated bathrooms and being from Florida it was greatly appreciated since I am not used to cold weather. However, I did enjoy the cool weather!
Lots of paddle and John boats for rent, bikes too😎
No Inflatables- it’s a beautiful reservoir.
I64 conveniently a mile up the road.
You will hear some traffic at night due to 64 and Jefferson Ave., also trains🛤 But you will also hear the wind blowing through the trees🍃
Sites are in woods on tar and gravel

We used to live in the neighborhood across the street (Yorktown/Ft Eustis highway) from the Newport News Park. It’s huge! Our children fondly remember riding bikes with their dad all over the park, and stopping for Slurpies at the 7-11 (back in the days when they got few sugary treats). Their swings are on exceptionally tall frames. Teens and adults can enjoy swinging pretty high on them. It’s also the location of a battleground (Civil War?, memory has holes).
Just a few miles East is Yorktown, and the Yorktown Battlefield and Monument. One of Gen. Washington’s tents and camp-trunks are in the museum. We sat on blankets on the sticker-riddled battlefield every 4th of July to listen to the military band concert and watch the fireworks overhead, launched by the Coast Guard out on the York River. Everyone was able to imagine a warzone better with the percussions of the fireworks blasting and echoing from the river.
In October, are the Yorktown Days, worth attending — many costumed participants in fife and drum parades, cooking yummy Brunswick Stew. Much history to see in quiet little Yorktown.
Several times, we stayed at a wonderful treed campground across the bridge at Gloucester Point.
