This was the nicest fairgrounds so far. Great stay. After saying that typical campground with our neighbor RIGHT there. We needed the hookups. Easy check in. Bathrooms ok. No laundry. Easy on and off Rte 20

We did not use the restrooms so I cannot report on them. Cell service is not good here, they do have WiFi, the quality of connectivity depends on how close your site is to the router.

We stayed here as an overnighter traveling from one place to another.
A Fairgrounds type of camping/rv park with BIG Ponderosa Pines.
We didn't have a reservation but there was plenty of open spots scattered around...We picked an electric/water site in the shaded cool, big pine trees which is important when its hot weather.
There are a few rows of full hook-ups all closely lined up in the hot sun, uggg! Occupied by long term renters.
Our Yellow Lab liked the mining type irrigation ditch to cool off in the water as it was blazing hot during our overnighter.
Decent large shower/ bathroom house.
There were numerous very bright LED streetlights (ugg!) scattered around the camp locations. I hope you have good black out shades like we do.
Wifi and Verizon cell service was up and down from good to bad.
Easy location to and from the Hwy 20/40 interchange and town.

The Nevada County Fairgrounds is right at the edge of downtown Grass Valley and right off the highway to Nevada City. So if you are visiting the area, it is a great location. There are two sections to the camping area: the water/electric sites in the trees and the full-hookup (and some W/E) in the open area. We stayed back in the woods at a water and electric site. We enjoyed being away from the more crowded full-hookup area and mostly had the area to ourselves. However, the sites in the woods are not well marked and it is unclear how one is expected to park if the sites are full. There is simply a shared power and water pedestals for the A and B sides of the campsite. But no visible parking pad. It wasn't an issue with us because it wasn't crowded. It appears all of the water/electric sites share the utility pedestal with another campsite and it looked like you might end up sharing the curb side of your RV with the site next to you. The full-hookup sites do have individualized utilities, but the spaces were quite tight.
The staff of the fairgrounds were very accommodating and one nice element is that they refill propane tanks there at a very reasonable rate.
The fairgrounds are a fairly nice area. There are many large oaks and ponderosas spread throughout the area to keep it cool and shady. There is a small pond available for children to fish in. The fairgrounds proper are open during business hours if you want to walk around there. It can be noisy if there is an event going on at the fairgrounds, though of course it also provides entertainment. We caught the tail end of a dance/music festival and one night there was sprint car racing. But things quieted down after 11pm.
Mobile coverage was surprisingly poor for being basically "in town." I assume it is just the lay of the land relative to the towers. The park does have wifi but it was not working during our stay. There is one small building inside the fairgrounds that has complimentary wifi. You should see the signs on the side advertising it if you walk around near the food concession buildings.

Did not expect this pleasant an experience when we chose this location. As previous people have said, proceed to Gate 4, things are fairly well marked except for the distinction between full hookups and the water/electric only. The arrow was missing directing us to that location. As reservations are made online and the office had called asking if we would pay the full balance in advance, we never stopped at the office to check in.
The sites in the water/electric only section are a little confusing, they are marked only by the hookups themselves and an occasional set of tire marks worn into the spot. As this section is basically an open field with hookups, parking was easy enough. We could have driven to the far side and pulled through had we thought about it. We were somewhat level, it wasn’t hard getting situated. Those sites also share the hookup between two sites and there appeared to only be one plug in for the electric. No one parked on the other side of us though, so we never had to go ask if there was a splitter. The online map shows a bathroom/shower and dump station in that site, neither was open while we were there. The one that was open over in the full-hookup section is clean enough, the water pressure and temperature in the shower were fine (free, btw), and there is a code for the bathroom. The confirmation email we received failed to give us this information, it wasn’t until the next morning that we were able to get that. Fortunately we didn’t really need it until then.
Ignore the sign at the dump station that says $15, it is free for registered campers. It is inconveniently located in that you are partially blocking either a roadway or a campsite while using it. Other than that it was fine, and as a bonus there is a handwashing station right there as well for when you are done.
Location-wise it was perfect for our needs. My husband was scouting fishing opportunities, I don’t fish. The Grass Valley area has a transit system (we are big transit supporters, being retired drivers) and the nearest bus stop was an easy 15 minute walk away for an exploratory trip into town. The nearest services are an easy 5 minute car ride up the road. If you luck into an event at the fairgrounds themselves, it may be a little more crowded, but our stay was quiet and pleasant.

Lucked out by being there during a free home and garden show, and a classic car show in nearby Grass Valley! If you aren’t a local, be aware that once you find the fairgrounds you need to go on down McCourtney Rd to gate four. There is no signage until you are right there. I paid 35/ night for e/w plus $3.50 online fee use of the on-site dump station included. My Verizon phone and hotspot worked fine.

We stayed in another site a couple weeks before staying in a premium site and it felt pretty cramped, especially if you want to sit outside at all. There is a lot of geese there at the lake so with that came a lot of goose droppings everywhere. Also, there isn’t a dog run at all but there is one 5 min away. :)

I usually stay away from fairground campgrounds, but this fairground is much more like a state park campground. gravel pad surrounded by grass. Try to get a site in the trees. Super friendly host.
