We stayed at Lakewood Park Campground in Barnesville, PA, for a few days for R&R. And we got it!
THINGS I LIKED:
- This place has the best of an old-fashioned campground with a great layout. But it offers modern amenities and utilities in a natural setting.
- Family owned and operated by folks who take great pride in offering a really nice place to stay.
- About 30-minutes to Jim Thorpe, PA, or Lehigh Valley Zoo.
- The place is filled with mature shade trees which offer some protection from the sun and a beautiful setting. But they take great care to remove problem trees and branches from the sites and roads.
- Fun activities during our stay included bingo and a food truck.
- Our site (#74) was plenty big enough for our 45’ motorhome and Jeep plus lots of room to spread out.
- The park is relatively new. Everything is clean and in great working order. All kinds of maintenance was going on throughout each day, and it shows.
- I contacted the campground by email after 11pm to inquire about availability to arrive a day early. I sent an email rather than a phone call as I had no expectation of a response until at least the next day. They replied within minutes, adjusted my reservation, sent a revised confirmation email, and didn’t ask for payment until I arrived for check-in. Wow, that’s top-notch service!
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:
Traveling to this campground requires driving several steep grades (8+%). Do your best, drive slowly, and stay focused. Of course, it’s not the campground’s fault, just something to be aware of when planning to visit.
WOULD WE COME BACK?
Absolutely, this is a nice place.

New campground, only 3 or so years old with an event space, cabins, and camp sites. Food truck on weekends. Beautiful acreage around a small lake with kayaks and paddle boats free of charge. Fishing catch and release. We were on site 45, a private pull through site. Sure was large and pretty level. Full hook ups at each site. Lots of permanent campers but very cute campers, and well maintained. Cabins look very nice from the outside. The loud train that goes by every 6 hours or so is slightly irritating at night but it’s too pretty there to complain. Only stayed one night traveling up the east coast. We tried to go to the local state parks but disappointing, poorly maintained in a very economically depressed area so cannot recommend that. An oasis in Barnsville!

Just a one night stay but were very happy with our experience. Pretty pond on the grounds. Just a one night stay but were very happy with our experience. Pretty pond on the grounds. Our site #60 was a pull through and had been graded level in the middle but did have a slope to get into which continued up on the other side. We were able to level our 26’ motor home without needing blocks but didn’t unhitch the toad given the slope pulling in.
There are train tracks along the campground but they were not a problem for us. It is majority seasonal sites, but walking around they all seemed well maintained and cared for. Didn’t use the bathhouses or laundry, but the building themselves look new and very nice.

This campground is new, and is currently expanding. We had full hookups. The owner lives in a 5th wheel at the campground. Lakewood Park Campground is also the same as Catalpa Grove Venue. Catalpa Grove Venue had a wedding on Friday, another on Saturday, another on Sunday, the cabins hold some of the wedding party. You will see them go here by the lake, over there by the stream, for pictures. Rumor had it that the cabins are scheduled through next year. The RV sites are not.
They have a lake and boat use is free to all campers.
Everything is new and nicely done. Bath house, laundry facility, etc.. The bathhouse and laundry area on the map closest to the store is completed, the other one further away on their map, the floor is pored, the rest should be finished in 2023. Everybody, including the owner are all very nice.
