I stayed here 2 nights...it is a little confusing about where to camp, b/c there is a notice on the bulletin board as you drive in that states you must camp in established sites only. However, I camped in one of the large pullouts along the road with other trailers but no campsite #. Technically, these may not be "campsites", but the areas are disturbed and in no way protected. This is a heavily used area, since it is one of the few dispersed camping areas around, and I don't envy the BLM trying to regulate where people go! It is located in the town of Virgin, close to Hurricane and LaVerkin. It is about 20+ minutes to Zion. Can't get much closer than that, unless you want a paid campground, and those are booked out far in advance. I noticed lots of (numbered) campsites on the side roads, with varying degrees of difficulty getting to them....the roads in looked a little rough, but I did see some trailers/MH down those roads. Just scout before you drive in, b/c there may not be many places to turn around. This road connects Virgin with Apple Valley to the south, and is used by locals who want to avoid the short but steep climb from Hurricane. You can expect some road traffic, but it was not bad, and there is a lot of bike use in this area. I was busy both days at Zion, so I can't speak for what it's like during the day, but when I'd return by sunset, most people were still out recreating too. Everyone was respectful of each other and nights were quiet and still ....so much so that I felt guilty hitching up my trailer the morning I left at 6am, not wanting to awaken anyone! As a single woman camping with my trailer, I felt safe here and would camp here again. Look for Sheep Bridge Road on the right, from Hurricane, coming into Virgin. From Zion, it's the first left after the "coral" colored restaurant on the hill to your right. Look for a small dirt parking area at the
beginning of the road to mark your turn
Note about Zion - a wonderful national park, but with 6 million visitors a year, it is nothing short of a madhouse there. I got into the park by 6:30am to get a parking spot in the visitor center lot - which was 75% full by the time I got there!
Be prepared to park in Springdale if you go in mid morning or after, and use the shuttle bus (great system! - there is a bus every 4 minutes)....trails are packed, but it's a park worth seeing.

Some of our favorite boondocking has been right here! It’s about 20 miles to Zion and 5 miles to the town of Hurricane. Cell service with visible/verizon was great, sunsets were phenomenal, it was quiet and sites were spread out pretty well. Views for days. Close to everything we needed including a fantastic laundromat and car wash. We dumped and filled at a Maverick gas station about 20 miles away in Washington on the way in. Each designated campsite has a fire ring. Of course with any dispersed camping area, there are negatives. The road was a bit rough (manageable), it was SUPER windy (always park the nose of the rig into the wind for less turbulence😩), red dirt and dust will be with you forever (UTAH), no trees=not a ton of privacy, especially since all marked camping areas are open and somewhat close to the road. Overall, it was one of our favorite boondocking spots we’ve experienced and would absolutely camp there time and time again!

There were minimal winds overnight which made it a little hot, but the views were worth it! We were far enough off of the road that the passing cars weren’t too loud, but we also didn’t have to travel far on the dirt road. The main road is gravel and reasonably maintained, but the off roads were a little bumpy. This was a great location to watch the sunrise and head to Zion.

Site 3 is relatively level and we parked facing north to take advantage of the sunset view of Zion NP to the east.
Mountain bike trail access is super convenient from any site here. Many trails are just a few minutes of riding from the site.

This was my first attempt at dry camping, and it went great! Yes, Sheep Bridge Mountain was rutted, but slow driving was no big deal. I turned off onto the first left towards sites 1-12. I parked at site #2 first then walked over to #3 to inspect (site 1 and 4 were taken already) My trailer is 28 feet long and coupled with my truck, we stretched out almost 50 feet. I saw that I could back into site 3 and still have room for my friends to join me to the side and have room for an outdoor awning and tables. The site was pretty clean, only a few little bits of trash from previous campers and some random deep holes dug into the ground in the far west of the site. Be careful during the night to not fall into a pit. I pulled close to the fire ring and put some leveling blocks on the west side. It was enough to keep everything nice and level. I fit perfectly with nothing sticking into the road. Further up the road has deep winding ruts. Dusty? Very much so. Every driver that passed by was respectful and slowed down to keep the dust down, but it’s inevitable. The red dirt is like confectioner’s sugar... super powdery!! It gets everywhere. My recommendation would be to make sure you bring a tarp, ground mat... something to help keep the dust out of your van, trailer, motor home etc. There was a slight breeze and warm during the day, perfect sleeping temp at night, in the 40’s. Convenience is that Hurricane is a 5 minute drive down the hill. Free dumping in La Verkin or head out to Apple Valley for a fee. It was a quiet and peaceful night and close to Gooseberry Mesa, which is where we rode. The JEM trail is all around you as well. You can definitely hear the traffic on the highway, loud engine noise travels far from trucks heading up from Hurricane. Neighbors were all quiet though.

We are always a little concerned driving our big Motorhome/pulling a car anywhere. But this was easy to get in and out of when dry. I would worry if it were wet but a great spot even for a big unit in the dry season!

Stayed here in the beginning of August when there were excessive heat warnings. The creek was completely dried up and we were able to snag the one single site with a tree. This lone juniper tree was the only reason we were able to survive there. Probably due to the heat we were the only campers out there, only one other car drove in later in the evening. Would not be the most private if there are other campers but it was still beautiful and fun to have the place to ourselves. Sad to have to pick up garbage left behind by others. Let's protect these resources by picking up after ourselves! Bumpy gravel road, but easy access.

Only boondocking.
This area is only 30 minutes away from Zion and several State Parks. Also close to shopping n Hurricane.
