Beautiful area, the lake is gorgeous and was a chilly foggy view that cleared into a sunny blue water morning. The fire ring was well established, the picnic tables and convoy are nice and the campground is well maintained. We weren’t bothered at all and the bathrooms had HOT SHOWERS and well functioning facilities. I took off a star because we were tent camping and had a hard time find a spot with level ground and ended up settling for a slightly sloped plot. There is also minimal wood in this area and we saw no place nearby to purchase any. We ended up using dryer lint and some dried shrubs twigs for a small fire to keep warm. Overall, I’d definitely camp here again and stay longer; I’d just need to scope out the other plots more and see if there was a better option.

We arrived on a Saturday and there were only 2 other campers. The route in from Fritch takes you through a neighborhood with some bumpy roads but nothing unmanageable. The campground itself sits on top of a cliff so it can get VERY windy here as other have mentioned. There are 8 sites but only 3 of them are really suitable for RVs. The last two in the loop are the most level. Each site is a pull over site, just off the main loop and has a shelter with picnic tables, a grill and nice fire rings. Was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was here!
The lake is BEAUTIFUL as are the sunsets. There are a few hiking trails around to hike, and there are 4 bathrooms that have showers with HOT WATER! Only thing I hate about boondocking is the navy showers, so we took advantage of the showers. Think public pool showers here, but each bathroom/shower has a locking door.
We had fluctuating Verizon service anywhere between 1-full bars, but mostly good signal.
Sadly the most level sites for RVs are near an oil pipeline compressor, which lets off terrible crude oil fumes almost constantly. We got used to it but if the wind is blowing the right direction, it can get pretty foul smelling.
Previous reviews stated they had locals messing with them. Plenty of locals come to use the showers, and roll through the campground, but we were never harassed thankfully.

This is a great spot if you can score one of the level spots. They are not pull throughs but more like pull up to sites. Each spot has a picnic table and some have fire rings I believe. If you cannot find a spot, try Sanford-Yale. That is where we went and it was a lot larger and had more level spots! This does have two bathroom/showers at the top where there is a small parking area. Dry camping with no hookups. Sanford-Yale has a handful of spots with electric and water but you have to reserve at the bait shop. The dry camping spots just pull up and enjoy! Pretty sure we had 2 LTE bars unboosted.

Drove down from Carthage, MO, hoping to avoid the cold snap. The Arctic blast came further south than anticipated! We are stuck here today, but should thaw out tomorrow and get very nice the following day! All of the other reviews of this place were spot on! I highly recommend this spot!

Stayed here October 18th and 19th while traveling along I40. We wanted to try some boondocking and see something new (to us). This was a beautiful place, well maintained, safe......and free! As some have described it was windy when we first arrived, but the winds died down through the night. We camped in a large, mowed, grassy area alongside the lake. The ground was dry, but a bit soft. I would not drive on the grass after a rain. There were only four other campers in the very large area we camped. A ranger patrolled the area and someone was there doing bathroom maintenance. In the morning a small herd of deer came near our trailer from the surrounding hills to drink from the lake. This location is near the Alibates Flint quarries and the National Park service conducts tours. Again, a very pleasant surprise that I’d recommend to anyone in the area.

It could be tough to stay with a larger Rv since you are parked along the side of the road which has curves and pad lengths aren't super long.
We stayed over on a Saturday night and it was busy when we arrived as the spots are used for day use activities also.
Be prepared for winds. We were under a wind advisory and had 30-40 mile an hour winds most of the night with gust up to 50.
All in all, it's hard to beat this spot for free and is a great layover campground

We stopped by here on May 22nd while heading back east from cross country camping. After being stuck in traffic on 40 for 2.5 hours, we arrived at about 7:30pm. Only 3 of the 9 sites were occupied, so we stopped at the third to last one. The wind was whipping pretty hard from the west, straight across the lake. What a view and what a sunset! We were a little sketchy at first and had already decided to sleep in the car when the neighbors walked up. We had concerns about storms and wind, but they reassured us that it wasn't going to storm until the next day and the wind would die down. They were local to the area. We set our tent up kind of under the shelter and tied to the chained down picnic tables and had the best night of sleep since the previous Saturday in Cortez, Colorado. We woke up at 7am with heavy cloud cover, but no rain, loaded up, and headed to Dallas. As for the weird stuff, we did have a truck that went back and forth to the boat ramp area at around 11pm and reved up the loud motor a few times when it would pass by the campground. We were still awake and we didn't hear it again. We would definitely stay here again while driving across country.

I’m not sure if there were more sites but this had about 10 maybe? The bathrooms/showers were in great shape, working and fairly clean for a free park. I used a Verizon hotspot to work for the day and had fairly reliable service. My At&t service on my cell wasn’t great but worked. The views were awesome and it was very windy but that was nice since it was a warm day. Used our vent fan and were comfy. We didn’t have time to do too much exploring but would definitely return again; maybe on our way back home!
