I counted 7 mostly large campsites beside the dirt road, before coming to the large meadow at 1.5 miles from the highway. There were at most 5 other campers in the meadow while I was there, and there was still plenty of space. There were thunderstorms almost every day, but the road remained perfectly driveable throughout, and the meadow surface remained rock solid.
At the far end of the meadow, the road becomes rutted, and there is one more large campsite. The road becomes completely impassable after that, and ends at a gate into the Taos Pueblo property, which extends all the way here from Taos.
Camping there was a delight, but at 9,200 ft, it was getting down into the mid-30s at night, although it was only the middle of August.
Verizon voice was good, but the internet signal was only an intermittent 3G, and very slow even for 3G. Sometimes there would be a signal for a few hours, and other times only for a few minutes.
Angel Fire is 7 miles east on US-64, over the pass. It's a very small settlement, but it has a grocery store, post office, True Value, 2 gas stations, and a ski lift that runs throughout the summer.
I bought water from a Glacier machine at Albertson's in Taos. There are also machines at Rite-Aid and Smith's. I got propane at Pendleton's in Taos. I never did find anywhere to dump my trash.

Even during a weekend in July, there were sites available. Closest town is Angel Fire which is about a 15 minute drive. Red River and Taos are about 40 and 35 minutes respectively. We both have ATT service and had 2 bars and LTE. We even streamed movies on Apple TV at night. Lots of flies around so our Clam screen house was a joy to have.
In all, a very peaceful time.

There are a number of places with fire rings scattered along the road. I stopped at the third one that I saw, and had a beautiful place. It was at a clearing in the forest, with a meadow on one side, and a creek running by on the other. A few people drove by while I was there, but most of the time it was totally quiet, and nobody camped within visual distance.
This lovely boondocking spot is in the mountains of New Mexico, not far east of Taos. If you're heading east from Taos on 64, turn left onto Forest Road 5 shortly before Agua Fria. It's a wide dirt road, that was in excellent condition when I was there and good for any vehicle (at least as far as I went). With a 21' rig I had no problems getting to a campsite off the road.
It's boondocking, so there are no facilities. Also no cell service. Just peace and quiet, and the sound of dozens of birds out enjoying the day.

We didn’t camp, just spent the day hiking, picnicking and napping. Absolutely beautiful area with lush trees, cool mountains air. Elevation was 9100 feet. We will camp next time.
