Wonderful national forest camping in a wildflower meadow! Terrific views and nicely spread out sites that are easy to access for the most part. The Wyoming trails (good for MTB) heads off in one direction and the other trail goes to the Rabbit Ears trailhead. Wonderful national forest camping in a wildflower meadow! Terrific views and nicely spread out sites that are easy to access for the most part. The Wyoming trails (good for MTB) heads off in one direction and the other trail goes to the Rabbit Ears trailhead. As previously noted, some of the pull-through sites (our site #8 among them) have a sharp a steep drop. Leveling was easy enough once in there, but I too wanted to get my door and awning facing the table and view (south). I had to turn around and pull in facing against traffic. Getting out and turning was not going to happen so we just scouted our exist and went the wrong way towards the campground exit. That was issue #1. Issue #2 was the only water available was via a hand pump close to the host site (#3). I asked the host about the other pump across from site #11 and he said it had been broken for 2 years! But we were able to fill out 6-gallon jug with a few minutes of vigorous pumping. I had hoped there might be a freshwater fill spigot so I wouldn't have to climb the mountain heavy. Finally, considering all the camping up here, it's really a shame there is no dump station anywhere. I didn't even try to find one in Steamboat (I assume a private campground is the only option). Going east I used the public dump at Walden, which was great. The only cell signal which was usable for basic surfing was ATT. With the router outside and the MIMO antenna pointing towards the entrance (the general direction of the closest tower), at best in the early morning, we got 5 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, but most of the time it was much less than that. I should note that the hosts were very low-key and did a good job of marking all the upcoming reservations on the reservable sites. The place was very clean as well.

We stayed in site #7 at the begining of July 2020, it was difficult to get into. It is a drive through spot, but it is a heck of a drop into the spot and climb out. We stayed in site #7 at the begining of July 2020, it was difficult to get into. It is a drive through spot, but it is a heck of a drop into the spot and climb out. Also the loops are one way, getting into the site following this rule would have your awning and door on the wrong side of the site. My wife watched traffic while I went the wrong way so the awning would open up to the site, and picnic table. While entering the site, it was such a dramatic drop that my front drivers side stabilizer drug the ground. It is still usable but it is a bent up mess now:) Mosquitos were horrible. Don't forget your bug spray!!! Cell signal wasn't bad with Verizon. We were able to stream some shows during our down time. Lake Dumont is beautiful and refreshing. There were a bunch of paddle boarders on the lake and a few fisherman around. Sites are nice and clean. We would happily stay hear again.

This lovely campground is spread out in a lightly forested alpine meadow along Rabbit Ears pass, above Steamboat Springs. The wildflowers were beautiful! Many of the sites are a bit sloped, although we only needed a bit of side to side leveling on ours. The spaces have good separation from the neighbors. It gets quite cold at night, ev... more
This lovely campground is spread out in a lightly forested alpine meadow along Rabbit Ears pass, above Steamboat Springs. The wildflowers were beautiful! Many of the sites are a bit sloped, although we only needed a bit of side to side leveling on ours. The spaces have good separation from the neighbors. It gets quite cold at night, even in summer, so be prepared. We would be happy to stay there again.
Approaching the campground from Highway 40, Google maps had our position a bit wrong, and we thought we had missed the turn for Dumont. Continuing on, we came to the correct road, which has a clear sign.

Dumont Lake doesn't offer much more over most of the free camping all around this area. It is the closest campground to Rabbit Ears Peak if that is your thing, and a tiny lake (not really worth even putting a canoe in). Dumont Lake doesn't offer much more over most of the free camping all around this area. It is the closest campground to Rabbit Ears Peak if that is your thing, and a tiny lake (not really worth even putting a canoe in). Few trees exist in the campground itself with gave me the feeling of sitting out in the open. Not bad if you rely on solar, but it could get pretty hot in the sun otherwise.
The sites are nice and large, with table an fire ring. Water is available in the campground (not at each site) via a manual pump. Vault toilets are there as well. Beyond that, not much more to speak of.
Just an inkling of Verizon there. A booster may make it a usable signal.
