I am a camper that loves protected wilderness wherever I go. I must have QUIET! I really enjoyed my time this last two days. The campground is clean and well maintained, check-in a breeze. Site was level and the restrooms/showers were clean. Cool (Feb), calm, and quiet. perfect respite from the busy world!

This campground (Comanche) has spacious mostly level sites, covered picnic areas that help cool things off, great bathrooms, showers with actual doors with locks (not just a curtain), a dump station, stable 50amp electric and decent AT&T and Verizon internet. We were able to work from the RV from here and we were not expecting to be able to. Dumpsters aren't plentiful but are available at the bath house and on the section around the corner from sites 4-6-8-10 (one was located more in the teens and one near the bathhouse on the teens side of the bathhouse). There was a fire pit at our site and a charcoal style metal grill adjacent as well. It was a well outfitted site.
Verizon ranged between 20-40 down and 1-5 up pretty steadily on a Galaxy S21 Ultra. AT&T on an MR1100 hotspot with no external antenna was 5-20 down and .1-3 up pretty steadily. With a MIMO antenna attached to the MR1100 on AT&T it was more like 60-70/1-5. These were usable for zoom calls where there wasn't a live picture being sent but audio and screen sharing were being sent and video was being received. This was far more usable than we expected it to be. Calyx Sprint/Tmobile had absolutely zero signal, even on our cat20 hotspot that has a really powerful modem to seek out signals. Nothing for miles around on Tmobile. Within the park there were locations that had great signal, more so than at the campsites. Of the campsites though Comanche had the best connection on Verizon and AT&T, plus it had the highest elevation which I think helps that and the star viewing. We didn't use a booster, but we did try our Netgear MIMO on the AT&T MR1100 and it did help.
The real reason to come here is the show at night. The heavens are bright, there are more stars visible than I have ever before seen and the falling stars are frequent and exciting. For three nights we watched the milky way, the space station, satellites and military aircraft in the distance practicing maneuvers, probably coming from Altus AFB, about 60 miles away. We identified planets, constellations, stars, the space station (using an app that tells you when it's coming) and even planes/helicopters (using an app that identifies aircraft). This park is a 2 on the Bortle Scale which measures the darkness in the sky. You can see the curvature of the earth, the milky way each night and so many stars. The only park in Texas that is better for sky viewing (a 1 on the Bortle Scale) is Big Bend. That's on our list too but we are not there yet. Many people had their night photography gear and their telescopes setup at their campsites.
We enjoyed going into Crowell (10 minutes south) for dinner at Sweet T's Italian/Pizza. Great food and wonderful service, highly recommend. It was a lovely outdoor family gathering. Grocery options and shopping are not plentiful but we found a little bit in Quanah (10-15 minutes north) at united Supermarket and that was enough.
There's good hiking with plant identification signs in the park. There's not a whole lot to do other than hang out, be a family, hike and wait for the stars to show up. After sunset is when the excitement begins. It is a great park for enjoying nature with family though. There are some activities that the rangers lead at night and during the day. They seem to be mostly over the weekends. We came at a time to coincide with the new moon, but they were announcing events on the weekend and the new moon this month was over the weekdays.
Go out to the scenic overlook by the lake after dark. It's a great spot for pitching inflatable hammocks and laying up looking at the stars in a flat area. Listen carefully for wildlife, some we knew what it was an some we did not. We heard coyotes after sunset and even in the morning every day we were there, repeatedly each night and day. Sometimes they were quite close. Keep your animals leashed and I wouldn't go for hikes with pets (even leashed) at night.
Highly recommend this park for the kind of activities we do. We work during the day and loved exploring during the evenings at night. Having some internet here to work with was a bit of a surprise but very welcome.
The weather in October was glorious. 55-65 at night, 65-80 during the day except one day when it hit 90. But the breeze and the shade of the covered picnic tables provided by the campground made a huge difference even on that hot day. The sites were super quiet, you are really in the middle of nowhere here. Sometimes over at the observation point to the lake you could hear some rural highway noise from highway 6 that leads to the park but it was not common. There's not a lot of traffic out here.
We will be back here, definitely. We are planning to come back for a meteor shower. Knowing we can work-camp means that we can come more often and stay longer.

We stayed 1 night in August 2021, passing through while on a long RV trip. Be sure to spend some time at the Visitors Center/ museum for some interesting history of the area. We only took a couple of short hikes early in the morning as it was 100-105 degrees later in the day. Tent campsites & picnic areas are beautiful but absolutely no one there midweek probably due to excess heat. The sparkling blue lakes made beautiful photos. We would definitely stay here again.

As a big fan of Texas State Parks, the camping situation at this particular one was a let down. In the Kiowa Loop, at least, sites are fairly small and have absolutely no privacy. Site 28 is the best of these, set up in a way that some short juniper trees block the view from the campground road.
Bathrooms are okay, a little dingy. Water hookups are scattered around the park. Not sure if they’re spacing us out for Covid (masks were recommended but not required) but it said they were full even though over half of the sites were unoccupied.
There are statues of two bison in the rather nice visitors center, but when I asked about bison in the park the ranger informed me that there were none, and she wasn’t sure why those statues were there. Other Tx state parks in the panhandle do have bison, as does nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
No Verizon service, barely a squeak of the stuff with a booster.
It’s very pretty here, as far as the state park in general goes, and dark skies are always a pleasure, but the camping leaves quite a bit to be desired.
The campground also said it was full, but at least half of the sites were empty. Maybe they’re only doing half occupancy during COVID, I didn’t ask but there were definitely sites that were not every other one, and tons of tent spots available. The whole “now that COVID has happened, we only allow reservations” thing is irksome.

I got a drive-up site at 5pm, probably the last one. An RV site, it was well equipped. The fee would be higher if I used the power. As a tent camper I appreciated the spotless restroom facilities. The sky is the show, really!

There are several trails, a lake for fishing and lots of wildlife. Copper Breaks Park is an official stargazing location — absolutely amazing! The sky alone is worth the stop here!
You can also feed Texas Longhorns on Friday and Saturday on the farm at the entrance of the park.
Rangers were super helpful.
We had an overall great stay, the Jonas would come back again.

We went out of our way to explore this park and I am very glad we did. The terrain looks like what you would see in an old western movie; I expected Roy Rogers to ride up anytime! And this park is an official "dark sky" location. Both features make for an interesting place to land. There are really no negatives as far as I am concerned, so let me tell you what I liked about it. The staff were friendly, helpful, and really "on top" of mowing and cleaning. The campsites were very generously spaced, and had both water and electric (50 amp). The utilities were in good working order and placed conveniently for our big rig. The roads and sites are asphalt and easily maneuvered and our site only required a slight adjustment to level. Each site comes with a covered picnic table and fire pit. We were at the park during CoVid and did not use the restrooms/showers, but the staff was in there cleaning throughout the day, so I can only imagine they were in good shape as well. There is a day-use/tent camping area right along the lake; the campground we stayed in (Comanche Loop) was on a bluff above the lake, but there was no real view of the water without walking a bit. Many of the others in the campground had some lovely, rather large telescopes for star-gazing and there were several hiking trails throughout the park. We stayed connected with 2-3 bars on both AT&T and Verizon. The park is located about 10 miles outside of the small town of Quahan, Texas. We enjoyed chicken fried steak at Medicine Mound Depot Restaurant and there is an old, but nicely kept laundromat at the edge of town. While there is not a Walmart in town, there is grocery/pharmacy as well as a Dollar General for supplies. The Hardeman County Historical Museum offers information about the Acme & Pacific Railway as well as the town’s namesake, Quanah Parker who was the last of the Comanche Chief’s and warriors. We throughly enjoyed are time at Copper Bend and would certainly stay there again.
